  • A Dialogical Perspective on Context in Development and Learning

    Open Access•Michèle Grossen•ARTICLE•Human Development•2026

As a transdisciplinary notion, context has been defined in numerous ways. To clarify it, I present three contrasting perspectives on context: context as a variable, as a co-construction, and as dialogue. To do so, I first draw on a post-Piagetian strand which, in the 1970s, explored the role of context in development. I then turn to sociocultural psychology which investigated interaction processes in assessment or learning situations. Finally, I …

  • Learning and developing over the life-course

Open Access•Michèle Grossen, T Zittoun et al.•ARTICLE•Learning Culture and Social…•2022

This article introduces the special issue “Learning and Developing over the Life-Course: A Sociocultural Approach”, which collects six papers stemming from the project “Ages for Learning and Growth: Sociocultural Perspectives” (AGILE), supported by the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction. Considering that sociocultural psychology has mainly focused on development and learning in children, adolescents or (young) adults, A…

  • Intelligence as a sensitive topic in clinical interviews prompted by learning difficulties

    Open Access•Michèle Grossen, Denis Apotheloz•ARTICLE•Pragmatics Quarterly Publication…•2022

The definition of intelligence, as everybody knows, has always been a controversial issue in psychology. Even scholars in this discipline do not agree upon a common definition and probably never will. An easy way to escape from this controversy is to take up Binet's famous joke "Intelligence is what my test measures". In fact, this pragmatic definition shows that intelligence is not only a scientific concept, it is also an historical and institut…

  • Learning to manage diabetes using a flash glucose monitoring device at a summer camp

Open Access•Giada Danesi, Mélody Pralong et al.•ARTICLE•Learning Culture and Social…•2021

Self-management of type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a difficult task that involves different actions and decisions and requires various types of knowledge. Nowadays, it can be done partly autonomously, using a mobile digital device that measures the level of blood glucose. The FreeStyle Libre, launched on the Swiss market in 2016, is one such device. Drawing on Science and Technology Studies and adopting a sociocultural approach to learning, the present …

  • Learning through obstacles in an interprofessional team meeting

Open Access•Jenny Ros, Michèle Grossen•ARTICLE•Outlines Critical Practice Studies•2020

Drawing both on cultural-historical activity theory and on a dialogical approach to discourse, this article expands a method of analysis developed by Engeström & Sannino (2011) to capture discursive manifestations of contradictions in an activity system. The data consist of recorded meetings of an interprofessional team working with persons living with both a mental handicap and psychiatric disorders. The mission of this team is to coordinate soc…

Open Access•Giada Danesi, Mélody Pralong et al.•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 8

This article focuses on the ways in which a flash glucose monitoring system, FreeStyle Libre®, is introduced and used by people living with type 1 diabetes, their relatives and healthcare professionals. It draws on a multi-sited ethnography in a variety of clinical and daily situations, and on interviews with caregivers and people living with diabetes. We explore how the users develop knowledge-in-practice, and consider the use of self-management…

  • Dialogism and dialogicality in the study of the self

    Open Access•Michèle Grossen, Anne Salazar Orvig•ARTICLE•Culture & Psychology•2011

This article stems from the statement that dialogical approaches to a study of the self face a double challenge: that of developing a conception of the self that both avoids social reductionism and accounts for the stability of the self. In discussing this double challenge, we identify three much debated issues: (a) To what does the notion of “Alter” exactly refer? (b) How could we conceptualize the fact that Subject–Alter interactions are not on…

  • Third parties' voices in a therapeutic interview

Michèle Grossen, Anne Salazar Orvig•ARTICLE•Text and Talk•2011

Drawing on a dialogical approach inspired by Bakhtin, we start from the assumption that a concrete discussion is an intermingling between dialogue in praesentia and dialogue in absentia, and we refer to the notion of "enunciative positioningâ to account for the various relations that a speaker may express toward the voices that he or she invokes. Our data are based on a first therapeutic interview between a therapist, a mother, and a child in a c…

  • Le dialogisme dans l'entretien clinique

    Anne Salazar Orvig, Anne Salazar-Orvig et al.•ARTICLE•Langage et société•2008•Cited by: 4•References: 2

Open Access•Isabelle Probst, Michèle Grossen et al.•ARTICLE•Swiss Journal of Educational…•2007
