Instant Futures: An Experimental Study of the Imagination of Alternative Near Futures Thanks to Science Fiction
Following Vygotsky's seminal work, sociocultural psychology has developed a powerful theory of imagination, considered as a process with mutual and transformative impacts with the social world. In this paper, we focus on the imagination of the future, which is an arena of special social and political contestation. We argue for integrating experimental methods into the scientific study of the re-composition, or synthesis process, in the imaginatio…
Boundary-Crossing Movements: A Resource for Student Learning
This paper focuses on the learning processes of students involved in a pedagogical design bridging in-class and out-of-class activities. As academic teachers–researchers, we designed a semester-long course in which academic and out-of-university activities interact and overlap. The data were collected at the end of the course from student reports (diaries) and audio-recorded semi-structured interviews inspired by the elicitation interview techniq…
Welcoming mobile children at school: Institutional responses and new questions
Switzerland, like other countries in Europe, has long depended on migration and mobility for its economy. Facilitating the integration of migrant children in school, primarily through the acquisition of the local language, has therefore been a priority for policymakers. In recent years, mobility has been on the increase and mobility trajectories have become more diverse. A growing percentage of families arriving in the country have experienced re…
The Dimension of the Body in Higher Education: Matrix of Meanings in Students’ Diaries
In this paper, we attempt to show some consequences of bringing the body back into higher education, through the use of performing arts in the curricular context of scientific programs. We start by arguing that dominant traditions in higher education reproduced the mind-body dualism that shaped the social matrix of meanings on knowledge transmission. We highlight the limits of the modern disembodied and decontextualized reason and suggest that, c…
Our paper reports on research on risk evaluation and management conducted with three probation services in French-or Italian-speaking cantons in Switzerland. It analyzes how probation officers construct an understanding and evaluation of levels of risk of reoffending for people convicted and serving parts of their sentences in an open environment. Our analysis combines observations of and interviews with probation officers using a method called "…
Citizen Science, Education, and Learning: Challenges and Opportunities
Citizen science is a growing field of research and practice, generating new knowledge and understanding through the collaboration of citizens in scientific research. As the field expands, it is becoming increasingly important to consider its potential to foster education and learning opportunities. Although progress has been made to support learning in citizen science projects, as well as to facilitate citizen science in formal and informal learn…
Concrete Psychology and the Activity Clinic Approach: Implications for Interventionist Research in the XXIst Century
This paper discusses the project of concrete psychology, anchored in vital human drama, both for Vygotsky and Politzer, and its methodological implications, especially from within an interventionist, developmental, transformative perspective. How are the concepts of concrete psychology and drama related for Politzer and Vygotsky? How can we push the agenda of concrete psychology foward? What are the methodological implications of a Vygotskian con…

Doing Research Upside Down: Action and Research in Cross Self-Confrontations
This paper highlights three main points. Firstly, it argues that despite the positioning of mainstream psychology as “objective research” i.e. disengaged from taking action in public life, there has always been in psychology a (quantitatively) minor but (qualitatively) strong tradition of intervention, defined as a joint practice engaging researchers and practitioners in social transformation. It shows how this alternative way of doing research a…
Being Through Doing: The Self-Immolation of an Asylum Seeker in Switzerland
In April 2016, Armin, an asylum seeker in a village of Switzerland, set himself alight in the public square of the town, one of a few cases reported across Europe. He performed the act following a denied request for asylum and was saved by bystanders. We present the results of two qualitative interviews conducted with Armin, his translator and his roommate following the incident. The act is theorized through the lens of a dialogical analysis focu…
Using Cultural-Historical Theory to Explore Trauma among Refugee Populations in Europe
The psychological impact of atrocities endured by refugee populations is clear, with the literature reporting significantly high prevalence rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Given the numerous criticisms surrounding the use of PTSD, we argue that cultural-historical psychology allows for a unique perspective in which to examine trauma among this population. Notably, we aim to bring a critical regard towards ‘psychiatrisation,’ argui…

Development of Professional Concepts Through Work Analysis: Tech Diving Under the Loop of Activity Clinic
This article deals with conceptual development in an emerging activity, Technical diving. Tech divers are equipped with innovative, complex machines (the “rebreathers”) to perform deep dives. The developmental methodology of cross self-confrontation was used to investigate the psychological dimensions of safety in diving with a group of volunteers (divers and instructors). One sequence of these data helps us analyze carefully the development of o…
