Middle-class Women and Domestic Work in India and the United States
This study compares middle-class women’s experience of domestic work in India and the United States(US), highlighting similarities in how domestic work is organised in its paid and unpaid forms across both sites. The focus on middle-class women’s experience as unpaid workers and employers of domestic workers provides an insight into how the social and economic values of domestic work are determined. Despite social and political differences, the p…
Jewish Identity and Community Participation in the Era of Croatian Neoliberalism
Bridging Food Scarcity
This study explores the livelihood strategies and food practices that Croatian women adopted during the post‐socialist era after two decades of economic and political reforms. I discuss how the decline of the nation's food production system and the emergence of neoliberal agricultural reforms impacted these household practices. I point out that the popularization of ready‐made foods led some women to choose self‐sufficient food practices, includi…
Working the Yucatán in the neoliberal landscape
This article examines the lives of academic women in Mérida, the state capital of the Yucatán in southern Mexico. In particular, I consider the relationship between work – including household management – and consumer practices in light of Mérida's changing socioeconomic climate. I address how women's lives have been impacted by the neoliberal restructuring of Mexico's political economy and what these changes mean to their experience of universit…
Notes From the Field
Recent literature suggests that community-based research (CbR) is a model of service learning that can advance student learning, as well as support the research interests of community organizations. For the pedagogy to be successful, however, faculty must overcome a number of challenges. This article discusses these challenges and illustrates how multidisciplinary, multiyear CbR initiatives are important vehicles for furthering university–communi…
Understanding Women's Work through the Confluence of Gender, Race, and Social Class
This article examines the experiences of women's work by focusing on the lives of working class and middle class women, African Americans, Caucasians and Latinas. Research for this project was conducted in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, with adult women who live, go to school, or work there. We spoke with adult women working toward their General Education Degree and those with higher levels of education. Using intersectional…
Life at the Crossroads of Social Change
This paper describes the challenges of Romani women's empowerment in the context of Croatia's rapidly changing political economy. Romani women—for the first time in Croatia's history—are positioned to reap substantial benefits from state largesse, including minority rights legislation, which promises, among other things, unprecedented educational opportunities, political participation, and greater access to the labor market. I discuss how Romani …
Accessing Romani Women Study Participants
I recently spent twenty-two weeks in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, for the purpose of establishing a Romani women's empowerment program2. My objectives were to help invigorate Croatian Romani women's lives, and to bring their lived experiences into public view. Given the demanding nature of my research agenda and preferred ethnographic approach, I had relatively little time to achieve those objectives
Course-Based Action Research and Anthropology
Selling Dreams and Buying Hope
This paper discusses the deceptive practices of unqualified immigration counselors and the prospects for community-based organizing and peer education as a means of steering potential victims away from such practices. Although legislators have recently begun to pay attention to the potential for unqualified counselors to exploit the vulnerability of immigrants, non-citizens continue to fall prey to the inviting and perceived cultural legitimacy o…
Maintaining Respectability and Responsibility
Gender-related factors and the social and economic conditions that impact the lives and health of women injection drug users (IDUs) in Chicago are described. Although study participants are highly imaginative and resourceful in terms of income-generating self-sufficiency, they engage in a variety of behaviors that put them at risk of contracting infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis B and C viruses. We point out that labor inequalities ex…
