Principal component analysis and fuzzy clustering for neighborhood-scale urban morphology-based thermal hazard assessment
Urban heat islands pose significant public health concerns, yet neighborhood-scale thermal assessment faces data limitations. Satellite-derived surface temperatures provide spatially complete coverage but measure surface radiative properties rather than pedestrian-level air temperature. Meanwhile, sparse meteorological networks cannot resolve intra-urban heterogeneity. Morphology-based approaches address this gap by using urban form characteristi…
Can the serious game serve as a tool for education in founding local adaptation solutions to climate change
The article presents the scientific-based strategic board game Neighbourhood with Climate, which aims to become an educational tool for adaptation on a local scale to climate change in temperate climates. The game used in climate education supports citizen engagement, empowering people with the knowledge of nature-based solutions (NbS), which could be applied to prepare and protect themselves and their community from extreme weather in temperate …
Spatial development indicators as a tool to determine thermal conditions in an urban environment
In the face of climate change and the growing frequency of thermally burdensome conditions, urban morphology and city planning are becoming increasingly important to human health. Architects and policymakers use various tools, including spatial development indicators describing the characteristics of built-up areas, to mitigate urban climate. This study purposed to (1) indicate which widely used spatial development indicators most adequately expl…
The stimuli of thermal environment defined according to Utci in Poland
The assessment of thermal stress stimuli in Poland was based on the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). Daily values of UTCI at 24 stations selected to represent the whole area of Poland at 12:00 UTC were calculated over the period 1951-2018. Various UTCI characteristics, i.e., spatial averages of daily, monthly and annual values, daily spatial contrasts (i.e., the difference between daily highest and lowest UTCI values) were defined in each …
Utci applications in practice (methodological questions)
UTCI, although it was developed with the participation of scientists from 22 countries, it has shortcomings and people using it face various obstacles. The difficulties include wide range of issues: from different availability of meteorological data in individual countries, through the kind of air temperature which should be properly used in calculations, or the need of recalculation of wind speed. However the biggest subject concern algorithms f…
