Border permeability and cross-border mobility in Europe, 1960–2020
This paper presents a long-term comparative assessment of border permeability across Europe at 10-year intervals between 1960 and 2020. Using a novel 10-point typology of border regimes, it traces spatio-temporal changes in border openness and their relation to the structural potential of cross-border mobility in adjacent regions, operationalised through demographic mass, economic attractiveness and other structural determinants. The results reve…
Following Old Routes in New Times: Ukrainian Refugees and Migration Patterns in Poland
Since the end of February 2022, most European Union countries have experienced a substantial inflow of refugees from Ukraine. The pace and scale of this movement are unprecedented. In some countries, such as Poland, this inflow has coincided with the presence of economic migrants who had arrived prior to the outbreak of the war. This article examines the spatial relationships between the inflow of Ukrainian refugees and (i) distance from the Ukra…
Hidden gateways to digital space—the spatial distribution of Wi-Fi networks in the context of demographic structure in rural areas
National and regional potential accessibility convergence by decay and decades in Germany, France, Spain, Poland and Romania in the years of 1960–2020
The paper seeks to adapt methods of national and regional beta and sigma convergence from socio-economic sciences to a spatial framework. The process of reducing disparities in accessibility levels is commonly linked with the concept of territorial cohesion. We dynamically explore this concept by integrating economic terminology and applying it within a spatial context. This is accomplished through the utilization of beta and sigma accessibility …
The Geographical Conditioning of Regional Differentiation Characterising the Covid-19 Pandemic in European Countries
The aim of this paper is to assess the influence of selected geographical factors on the diversity of the development of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe's regions, and on its dynamics across the continent. The work took into account 250 of NUTS-2 regions. The datasets included the course of the COVID-19 pandemic (two dependent variables), intervening actions (four variables of the research background), and potential environmental and socio-econom…
Socioeconomic Conditioning of the Development of the Covid-19 Pandemic and Its Global Spatial Differentiation
The COVID pandemic very quickly became the world's most serious social and economic problem. This paper's focus is on the spatial aspect of its spread, with the aims being to point to spatial conditioning underpinning development of the pandemic, and to identify and assess possible socio-economic features exerting an impact on that. Particular attention has been paid to the percentage of positive tests for the presence of the coronavirus, as well…
