  • Distinguishability between ancient and modern leaded tin bronzes by the composition of their lead inclusions

    Open Access•Sana Shilstein, A Berner et al.•ARTICLE•STAR Science & Technology of…•2019

The composition of lead inclusions in modern and ancient leaded tin bronzes was studied by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) in Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Lattice parameter of lead inclusions in all bronzes was smaller than the lattice parameter of pure lead. This determination indicates that lead inclusions in bronzes are nothing else but Pb–Sn solid solutions. Tin concentration in lead inclusions in moder…

  • A Comparison Study of Middle Bronze Age II Daggers and Their Rivets as a Tool for a Better Understanding of Their Production

    Open Access•Tal Kan-Cipor – Meron, T Kan-Cipor-Meron et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2018•References: 9

The Middle Bronze Age II is a period during which there exists a contemporaneous usage of arsenic copper and tin bronze for metal weaponry production. In order to learn more about the alloys used in this period, the blades and rivets from 65 daggers of two significantly different types, which were discovered at the Rishon LeZion (RL) cemetery, Israel, were tested by the non‐destructive method of X‐ray fluorescence (XRF). The results reveal new kn…

  • Metalworking at H azor

    Open Access•Naama Yahalom‐mack, Yuval Gadot et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•2014•Cited by: 6•References: 16

The temporal and spatial distribution of metal production remains from H azor was used in this study to sketch the development of metalworking (bronze, iron and silver) at this important site. The remains attest to a long sequence of metalworking at H azor, from the M iddle B ronze A ge through to the I ron A ge, and significantly highlight the transition from bronze to iron production and the mode of bronze production after the transition had be…

  • M iddle B ronze A ge II Battleaxes from R ishon L e Z ion, I srael

    Open Access•Shalev, S SHALEV et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 12

Thirteen bronze battleaxes from M iddle B ronze A ge II graves at R ishon L e Z ion, I srael were analysed by ED XRF at multiple surface locations in order to determine their metallurgical composition. Six of these were further subjected to neutron diffraction using an ENGIN‐X diffractometer in order to determine bulk phase composition. The results indicate that the previously established geographical and chronological variability in S n– C u (wi…

  • Identifying a Roman Casting Pit at Tel Dor, Israel

    Adi Eliyahu-Behar, Adi Eliyahu‐behar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 15

The functional identification of industrial features is difficult when few characteristic artifacts are preserved. We studied a Roman-period pyrotechnological feature at Tel Dor, Israel, where the only possibly diagnostic ceramic artifacts were found in fill between the walls and above the floor, rendering their association with the feature itself uncertain. The ceramic artifacts included coarse slabs and fragments of utilitarian vessels, some vi…

  • ʿEn Yahav

Yuval Yekutieli, Sana Shilstein et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Schools…•2005

The paper describes the first field season at a small copper-smelting site in the central ʿArava, which had operated in the Early Bronze Age IV (EB IV) and most probably in the Roman period as well. The fieldwork focused on three main projects: a surface survey, a multipurpose sampling, and an excavation of a small probe. An additional goal set for this season was the formulation of a methodological procedure of bringing the lab into the field-na…
