Helping school leaders see variation and build the capability to improve complex systems
This study investigates how educational leaders within a research-practice partnership used improvement science thinking and tools to address declining attendance rates following the COVID-19 pandemic. Utilizing time-series data and run charts, central office leaders and school administrators visualized system performance, allowing them to see variations and patterns over time. The partnership’s focus on variation helped leaders challenge their i…
In memoriam - Nora Sabelli: Master orchestrator of grant programs and mentor for advancing the interdisciplinary learning sciences field
On Friday, September 6, 2024, the learning sciences field lost a giant in Dr. Nora Sabelli, 87 years old, a personal mentor to many researchers and an inspiration to so many learning scientists and
Learning Improvement Science to Lead: Conditions that Bridge Professional Development to Professional Action
Background: As more education practitioners adopt techniques of improvement science to address problems of practice, there is an increasing demand for leaders with the knowledge and capacity to lead improvement efforts. However, little research explores how school leaders learn to lead improvement science in their school context or the challenges they may face in doing so. To ensure leaders are supported in learning increasingly common school imp…
Fertile Boundaries for Field Building
The chapters in this issue are a clarion call for the science of learning and development to create productive, sustainable, and care-centered partnerships across academic fields that extend into partnerships with local communities. While applauding the wisdom of this communitarian aspiration, this commentary cautions that forming productive intellectual peerages between the often viewed as elite and distant Academy and local communities, who too…
Disrupting White Supremacy and Anti-Black Racism in Educational Organizations
White supremacy and anti-Black racism are deeply embedded in educational organizations and disrupting them is key to creating more racially just schools. This essay details how the regular practice of organizational routines reproduces racial domination and subordination. We argue that combining critical perspectives on race with organizational improvement approaches can help disrupt this reproductive process. More specifically, educators can eng…
Responding to Covid-19 With the Aid of Mutually Beneficial Partnerships in Education
The COVID-19 pandemic has altered the structures and routines of K-12 education. Districts and school systems worldwide continue to adapt their ways of working to address a variety of challenges–many of whose dimensions are complex, dynamic, and not entirely known. Without cooperation and collaboration among stakeholders, institutions, and communities, we will be less able to address students’ social, emotional, and learning needs. In this paper,…
Redressing Science Learning Through Supporting Language: The Biology Credit Recovery Course
Annually, thousands of U.S. students fail high school introductory biology. The language demands of biology are large, and science teachers are often unprepared to support students’ language needs. Here, we describe a 4-week summer high school introductory biology course executed in a large West Coast city. Our aim was to help 33 students recover their biology credit. A centerpiece of the 4-week course was the embedding of metacognitive language …
Understanding Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Arrest: The Role of Individual, Home, School, and Community Characteristics
At the Nexus of Improvement Science and Teaching: Introduction to a Special Section of the Journal of Teacher Education
Traditional Research and Development (R&D) in education specifies a process of extensive development, followed by testing through the use of methodologies that privilege attribution of effects to causes. If warranted, the program is then turned over to the field for spreading as a research-based Rarely are similar impacts ever realized. The simple reason is that although attributional research helps us to know that some practice can produce some …
Embedding Language Support in Developmental Mathematics Lessons: Exploring the Value of Design as Professional Development for Community College Mathematics Instructors
Three community college faculty members used improvement science techniques to design, develop, and refine contextualized developmental mathematics lessons, where language and literacy pedagogy and related supports figured prominently in these instructional materials. This article reports on the role that their design experiences played in professional learning. The article uses a model of professional learning developed by Clarke and Hollingswor…
Modeling the Transition to Public School Choice
We develop an agent-based model that captures the dynamic processes related to moving from an educational system in which students are automatically assigned to a neighborhood school to one that gives households more choice among existing and newly formed public schools. Analysis of our model reveals the importance of considering the timing of the entrance of new schools into the system in addition to their quantity and quality. Our model further…

Creating Social Relationships: The Role of Technology in Preservice Teacher Preparation
In this article, the authors explore how the pervasive availability of technology allows for new social arrangements in teacher education by connecting preservice teachers, school-based personnel, university faculty, and others in deep and engaging ways. The authors illustrate this perspective and then propose four implications for teacher education institutions that build on this view. Specifically, the authors recommend that technology be used …
Using the World Wide Web to Build Learning Communities in K-12
Many are the conditions which must be fulfilled if the Great Society is to become a Great Community .... The highest and most difficult kind of inquiry and a subtle, delicate, vivid and responsive art of communication must take possession of the physical machinery of transmission and circulation and breath life into it. When the machine age has thus perfected its machinery, it will be a means of life and not its despotic master. – John Dewey (193…

Learning to Use a Text Editor: Some Learner Characteristics That Predict Success
Why do some people have much more difficulty than others in learning a computer-based skill? To answer this question, we observed first-time users of computers as they learned to use a computer text editor. In two experiments, older people had more trouble than younger people and those who scored low on a standard test of spatial memory had greater difficulty than high scorers. These correlations were stable over several hours of practice and did…
