  • Wychowanie. Rewizja terminologii

    Open Access•Piotr Kowzan•ARTICLE•Kultura-Społeczeństwo-Edukacja•2025

In light of the critical perception of upbringing, dominant pedagogical literature fails to adequately address contemporary social challenges. This article analyses the weaknesses of traditional approaches to upbringing, particularly in terms of their autonomy from external political, social, and economic forces. Using Maton’s Legitimation Code Theory (LCT), I examine definitions of upbringing in terms of positional and relational autonomy. The f…

  • Wild Competences

Open Access•Przemysław Szczygieł, Piotr Kowzan•ARTICLE•European Journal for Research on…•2025

The article examines the concept of competences from a critical perspective. The authors begin with an analysis of the dominant competences discourse, highlighting its limitations in times of polycrises. They propose the concept of wild competences, acquired through collective actions. These competences are both individual and collective in nature. Unlike traditional competences focused on adaptation within neoliberal frameworks, wild competences…

  • The humiliated began to sing

    Open Access•Piotr Kowzan•ARTICLE•European Journal for Research on…•2023

In this article, the protest songs of teachers on strike were analysed as a traditional pedagogical tool of popular education, social movements, and trade unions. An important context for this was the commodification of the entertainment market, expectations towards the teaching profession, and the state of musical competencies in the population. By identifying what the essence of teaching in the teachers' protest songs was, recommendations for m…

  • Militant Research for Peace Education. The Case of Grupa Granica on the Polish-Belarusian Border

Piotr Kowzan, Przemysław Szczygieł•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Education•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Peace education prepares people to deal peacefully with conflicts of various scales. The authors want to enrich this education by paying attention to situations when international tension increases, and it is still possible to defuse it. Social movements sometimes highlight the hidden conflicts in society. They provoke the authorities to act and sometimes even force them to reveal their intentions. In this article, the authors look at the use of …

  • Social movement learning about violence

Open Access•Piotr Kowzan, Przemysław Szczygieł•ARTICLE•European Journal for Research on…•2022

The article analyses learning related to experiencing violence in social actions and social movements. Activists may experience physical abuse from individuals and from organised entities such as the police, both accidentally and as a form of intentional repression. Applying the social movement learning approach to the analysis of individual experience, collective responses to violence, and preparations for the eventuality of its occurrence allow…

  • Parental meanings attributed to children's participation in street protests

    Open Access•Piotr Kowzan, Iwona Świdlińska•ARTICLE•Children & Society•2022

Our research into meanings attributed by parents to children's participation in street protests reveal various reasons why children are deliberately taken to protests, even the children who can barely speak. We also looked at parental educational efforts related to the participation in the protests, as described by the parents themselves. The interviews were inspired by the phenomenographic approach. The analysis resulted in a conceptual graph of…

  • Debt, Learning and Migration in the Time of Crisis

    Open Access•Piotr Kowzan•ARTICLE•European Journal for Research on…•2020

This paper discusses the issue of learning in adulthood by those who were indebted during the financial crisis of 2008-2009. The field research was conducted in Iceland, where interviews with indebted Icelanders and migrants were conducted, along with a broader ethnographic study. The result of the study is a model of learning based on Peter Jarvis model, but adjusted when it comes to the context of social crisis and the possibility of migration

  • Polish complementary schools in Iceland and England

Małgorzata Zielińska, Piotr Kowzan et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Intercultural…•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Since 2004, the opening of labour markets has spurred a considerable number of Poles to emigrate e.g. to Iceland and England. Families with school age children have had the challenge of adapting to foreign environments and school systems. Polish complementary schools have played an important, albeit ambivalent, role in this process. Through focus group interviews with students in Polish complementary schools in one city in Iceland and one city in…

  • Krytyczna czy bankowa? Edukacja ekonomiczna na uniwersytecie i poza nim

    Open Access•Piotr Kowzan•ARTICLE•Praktyka Teoretyczna•2013

Social movements at universities have recently flourished as a response to the Bologna Process and austerity measures at universities, but studies on learning within these movements are still scarce. Our goal is to describe one movement which started at the University of Gdańsk in 2009 and aimed at democratising the university and implementing various changes concerning space management and decision-making processes both within academia and in te…
