Andrew Hannan, Tony Charlton•ARTICLE•Research Papers in Education•1999•References: 7

This paper presents findings from a survey of the leisure activities of the middle‐school pupils of St Helena (an island of 5644 inhabitants, isolated in the mid‐South Atlantic) before and after the introduction of broadcast television. Previous studies had shown that these children exhibited very low levels of in‐school ‘problem’ behaviour. • Teachers' Ratings of Nursery Class Children's Behaviour before and after Availability of Television by Satellite

Open Access•Tony Charlton, David Coles et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1997

Teachers rated children's behaviour in two nursery class cohorts on St. Helena, South Atlantic Ocean. Ratings were obtained for the 1993 cohort (n = 54) prior to the availability of satellite television and the 1995 cohort (n = 57) after the introduction of television. Analysis showed some reductions in ratings of children's adaptive behaviour after the availability of television

Kenneth David, Tony Charlton•BOOK•Pastoral Care Matters in Primary…•1996

  • Prevalence of Behaviour Problems among 9- to 12-Year-Old Pupils on the Island of St. Helena, South Atlantic

    Open Access•Tony Charlton, Elizabeth Leo•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1994

The Rutter Behaviour Questionnaire was used to assess prevalence rates of behaviour problems in 9- to 12-year-old pupils (N = 402) in St. Helena, South Atlantic. The prevalence rate for this enquiry (6.9%) is among the lowest found in the literature for studies using this questionnaire with similarly aged samples

  • Inferred and Expressed Self-Concepts of Undergraduates

Open Access•Tony Charlton, Elspeth Mitchell et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1993

In this investigation expressed and inferred ratings of self-concept were obtained from the Self-description Questionnaire III for 42 Year-1 undergraduates enrolled in psychology classes. Significant correlations are reported between self-other ratings among all 13 subscales

  • Inferred and Expressed Self-Image of Pupils Rated by Teachers as High and Low in Anxiety

Open Access•Tony Charlton, Elizabeth Leo et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1992

The association was examined between 98 third-grade pupils' expressed self-image scores and inferred self-image ratings from teachers. Significant self-other agreements were found with sexes combined. With sexes separated, significant self-other agreements were found for the 52 girls, but not for the 46 boys

  • Enhancing Internal Locus of Control Beliefs through Group Counselling

    Open Access•Tony Charlton, Colin Terrell•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1987

The effects are examined of a group counselling programme designed to promote internal beliefs upon third grade pupils' reading performance. After a 15-wk. intervention period the counselled group showed significant mean gains in reading age. Nonsignificant findings were reported for the control group

  • Differential Effects of Counselling and Operant Conditioning Interventions upon Children's Locus of Reinforcement Control Beliefs

    Open Access•Tony Charlton•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1986

The differential effects were examined of counselling and operant conditioning interventions upon locus of control beliefs of 173 pupils in Grade 6, as measured by the abbreviated Children's Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale both before and after an 11-wk. intervention. Whilst both interventions effected significant increases in pupils' internal locus of control beliefs, stronger effects followed counselling
