A tale of bifaces from southern peninsular India (British Museum and Musée de l'Homme collections): A geometric morphometric and classical approach
Bifacial tools (especially handaxes and cleavers) have played an important role in the Lower Palaeolithic studies trying to decode Acheulean lifeways through them. The methodological approach based on classical metrical analysis, could be insufficient and often subjective, especially in instances of asymmetrical tools, and incorrect orientation for capturing the morphological data. Recent years have seen the application of geometric morphometric …
Plant processing experiments and use-wear analysis of Tabon Cave artefacts question the intentional character of denticulates in prehistoric Southeast Asia
The presence of notches on European Palaeolithic flaked stone tools termed ‘denticulates’ has been variously ascribed to cultural, functional and taphonomic factors. In Southeast Asia prehistoric stone tool assemblages are dominated by unretouched flakes, so the rare retouched lithics, including denticulates, can be considered unique testimonies of the intention of the tool makers to control the shape and properties of tool edges. Here we report …

Non-utilitarian lithic objects from the European Paleolithic
We present here previously unpublished non-utilitarian Paleolithic stone objects, within the contextual framework of similar objects from European sites. The occurrence of non-utilitarian lithic objects, often modified, in Middle Stone Age or Upper Paleolithic sites is now widely accepted as evidence of symbolic behavior associated with the appearance of Homo sapiens. However the occurrence of non-utilitarian and unusual objects in far earlier si…

Handaxe Assemblages from the Didwana region, Thar Desert, India: A Metrical Analysis
The Didwana region has preserved lower palaeolithic artefacts in primary and semi-primary contexts. On the basis of geological stratigraphy of aeolian and playa sediments, artefacts occurring in a stratified context have been dated to the Middle Pleistocene. In order to work out technological evolutionary trends of the acheulian culture in this region, 301 handaxes from 10 localities have been studied following Roe's methodology, with some additi…

Coupe-Gorge cave belongs to a karstic system near the village Montmaurin (Haute-Garonne). Its palaeontological material is spread over three layers of which the oldest is by far the thickest and the richest one. Detailed study of the industry from this lower layer helps in specifying some of its aspects : raw material, state of flaking and morphology of the flakes, fractures and irregular retouches, typology of the tools. About half of the small …

Processing sequences in the Indian Lower Palaeolithic: Examples from the Acheulian and the Soanian
During the Palaeolithic and especially during the Lower Palaeolithic, the prehistoric people of India were making and using two different types of lithic assemblages. To the south of the Indo-Gangetic basin their cultural remains belong to the Acheulian, characterized by the presence of Handaxes, sometimes cleavers, and by small tools on flakes or other pieces of stone. To the north of the Indo-Gangetic basin, in the Siwaliks, most of the sites y…
The Lower Palaeolithic Industry from Azé Cave (Saône et Loire) France: A case study of an assemblage without any handaxes
The Azé Cave (Sâone-et-Loire, France) has yielded, among other archaeological and palaeontological remains, a Lower Palaeolithic industry within a layer dated through faunal remains to 400–350 kya. This industry is made up of local rocks, mostly poor quality flint, and also chert and crystalline rocks. Only flint was definitely knapped; chert was only broken into pieces before being used. The process of knapping is opportunistic and the cores, se…

Genesis of calcretes from the calc‐pan site of Singi Talav near Didwana, Rajasthan, India—A micromorphological approach
Chemistry and micromorphological studies of calcretes occurring in the interdunal calcpan site of Singi Talav, near Didwana, Rajasthan, India are presented in this paper. These analyses reveal that the calcretes are formed by a process of reprecipitation and recementation. They are pedo‐sedimentary and are also affected by groundwater during origin. A geomorphic model for explaining the evolution of the calc‐pan site is suggested
