Geological dating of the earliest Minusinsk Depression rock art, the Maydashy site, Southern Siberia
The hypothesis of Paleolithic rock art in Siberia remains neither proven nor disproven. This research provides key evidence for a later age of the earliest known images in the Minusinsk Depression. A set of geological, geomorphological, and absolute-dating methods was utilized to reconstruct the geological history of the Maydashy rock art site (Minusinsk Depression, Southern Siberia). This research for the first time has allowed us to date the lo…

Stylistic Parameters of Minusinsk Rock Art Style
Raman Spectroscopy Analysis of Pigments from the Boyary I Rock Art Site, Khakassia
Rock Art of Chertovo Pleso on the Kiya River
Over the last five years of research at the Chertovo Pleso rock art site, located on the bank of the Kiya River (a tributary of Ussuri), the processing of digital elevation models (DEMs) has led to the discovery of new images. These include superficial ones that are not visible to the naked eye, even under varying lighting conditions. It has been established that the majority of the petroglyphs at this site belong to the so-called Sikachi-Alyan g…
Analytical Tracing as a Method for Recording and Understanding Rock Art
The article explores the potential of documenting engravings, analyzing one of the key copying techniques—tracing. Although this approach has some subjectivity as compared to other contact recording techniques based on the principle of estampage, the focus is placed on the analytical capabilities of tracing, which are enhanced as the method develops. This is revealed through the case of re-analysis of a tracing made during the 2016 fieldwork at t…

Excavations in 2022–2025 yielded a collection including four items: three pendants and a disk fragment. Pendant No. 1 is a complete, sub-cylindrical piece with a defined “head” and a …
Functions of Obi-Rakhmat Pointed Tools
This article presents an experimental use-wear analysis of stone arrowheads, investigating the formation of projectile impact traces. The study focuses on points made from silicified limestone, the predominant raw material at Obi-Rakhmat Grotto (Uzbekistan) — a key Middle Paleolithic site in Central Asia. During modelling, imitation of real-life hunting with a bow was preferred over controlled experiment. In a pilot experimental series, 21 lithic…
Raman Spectroscopy Analysis of Pigments from the Boyary I Rock Art Site, Khakassia
This article describes previously unknown paintings at the Boyary I rock art site, Republic of Khakassia. They are especially important because they were situated in the part of the panel where a missing ledge could have been located. The petroglyphs could indicate the time of its disappearance. Based on stylistic features, it is possible that they date to the Karasuk period (late 2nd to early 1st millennium BC). The article presents the results …

Stylistic Parameters of Minusinsk Rock Art Style
This study focuses on the formal typology of petroglyphs belonging to the Minusinsk tradition. While these are widely distributed, we analyze only zoomorphic images from the Minusinsk Basin, because the earliest rock art in Southern Siberia and Central Asia, we believe, refers to a definite chronological stage, whereas the Minusinsk Style is its regional manifestation associated with the local cultural tradition. The purpose of the study is to id…

Sketch in Rock Art of Minusinsk Depression
The author considers rock art images that can be categorized as sketch images. The category usually includes some partial images or petroglyphs, which initial outlines were altered in the course of presentation, yet, remained well enough visible. The partial images are particularly common in the earliest rock art. However, it is possible to assume various ways how a sketch could have been used in rock art of various periods in the Minusinsk Basin…

An Elk Figurine from Tourist-2, Novosibirsk
Most figurines from the Bronze Age cemetery Tourist-2 in Novosibirsk are anthropomorphic, and follow one and the same iconographic style, termed “Krokhalevka”. Two fragments, however, refer to a zoomorphic image—that of an elk. As they cannot be refitted, a special analysis was carried out. Computer-aided measurements and statistical comparisons suggest that they belong to a single specimen. This is important for further study, the search for par…
Leaf-Shaped Bifaces in the Initial Upper Paleolithic of Southern Siberia and Central Asia
An important component of the study of the complexes of the initial Upper Paleolithic (IUP) is the selection of marker tools – products with certain morphological properties and a specific chronological and territorial binding. One of the markers for the industries of the military-industrial conflict of Southern Siberia and the north of Central Asia are leaf-shaped and oval bifaces. These tools are flattened, have either a biconvex or a convex cr…

The bison of La Grèze (Dordogne, France) under the microscope
The scope of traceology, as defined by S.A.Semenov who founded the discipline, was broad, but in half a century most of the studies have focused on the use wear of lithic tools. Nonetheless, some pioneer works show that the analysis of tool marks can provide useful data to rock art studies and helps to address questions about the techniques, the « chaîne opératoire » and the chronology of the pictures. A topic which is directly linked but which h…

Geometric Microliths in Upper Paleolithic of Northern Mongolia
Middle Upper Paleolithic of Northern Mongolia is currently more likely an ephemeral definition, than a clearly determined cultural event. Some complexes that could be related to this stage according to their stratigraphic position in sequence, are scanty and not dated. Albeit, about 16 000 years BP people occupied the Middle Selenga valley left complexes of artifacts that are still hard to determine by its genesis or cultural attribution. Compare…
