  • Examination of the postmortem alteration of dental enamel – combined analytical approaches and pre-treatment method standardisation

Open Access•Csaba Farkas, Máté Karlik et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2026

Oxygen isotope (δ 18 O) analysis of carbonate-bearing hydroxyapatite from human dental enamel is widely used in archaeological studies because it reflects the isotopic composition of ingested water. However, certain postmortem alteration processes may affect the δ 18 O signatures of the carbonate (δ 18 O c ) and/or the phosphate (δ 18 O p ) components. This study investigates the diagenetic changes to human dental enamel samples from two Hungaria…

  • The Issue of Gellértegyháza – From another Perspective

    Open Access•Zoltán Rózsa•ARTICLE•Hungarian Archaeology•2025

It is a common tendency in studies presenting 10th–11th century assemblages to interpret foreign or atypical finds as mere trade goods. This one-dimensional perspective is often coupled with the “shackles of linearity”, which envision the transformation of pagan Hungarians into Christian Hungarians in the 10th-century Carpathian Basin as a straightforward, linear process. In this view, anything associated with the “old world” is considered outdat…

Based on the overview of hungarian and international literature, the following picture emerges regarding the function of the bone tubes from Orosháza. Among the bird bone artifacts featuring one to three central openings, scholarly classifications suggest they could have functioned as thread guides, whistles or needle cases.
