  • Best Lessons for Well‐being From Psychologists

    Open Access•Anthony Thompson, Anthony P Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Psychologist•2013•References: 16

Psychological knowledge contributes in many ways to promoting individual and social functioning. Within the discipline, an energetic culture of public education has grown in recent decades with the objective of elucidating the relevance of psychology. There are many examples of translating and communicating psychological science for public consumption. In the current study, we interviewed 30 psychologists to explore their ideas about helping peop…

  • Shedding Light on the Difficulties and Challenges Experienced by Mothers of Infants

    Open Access•Emma J Marshall, Anthony P Thompson•ARTICLE•Australian Psychologist•2013•References: 6

Adjustment to life with a newborn presents a variety of challenges, and some mothers experience postnatal disorders. It may be more normative for mothers to face less severe but nevertheless troubling difficulties. In this qualitative study, seven mothers (32–42 years) participated in individual interviews about the stresses and difficulties that they experienced with their infants. An interpretive analytical approach was used to identify the man…

  • Subjective realities of older male farmers

    Open Access•Judith Gullifer, Anthony P Thompson•ARTICLE•Rural Society•2006•Cited by: 12•References: 1

The research focused on the experiences and identity of aged male farmers in relation to farming and ageing using a phenomenological design. A sample of eight Australian farmers ranging in age from 65 to 80 years participated in audio taped interviews. Thematic analysis revealed four prominent themes, 1) the narrative of ‘toughness’, 2) a down-to-earth view of ageing, 3) attachment to place and 4) the importance of feeling productive and useful. …

  • Assessing juvenile offenders

    Open Access•Anthony P Thompson, Zoe Pope•ARTICLE•Australian Psychologist•2005•References: 3

Some of the psychometric results were presented by Thompson, A. P., & Pope, Z. (2003). The conceptual and psychometric basis for risk – need assessment in juvenile justice. In M. Katsikitis (Ed.), Proceedings of the 38th APS Annual Conference (pp. 224 – 228). Melbourne: The Australian Psychological Society. The developmental phase and preliminary psychometric data are reported for an Australian adaptation of an assessment inventory for juvenile of…

  • A survey of brief intelligence testing in Australia

    Open Access•Anthony P Thompson•ARTICLE•Australian Psychologist•2003•References: 3

A sample of 313 Australian psychologists responded to a survey about their use of brief intelligence tests. Among those administering intelligence tests, approximately one in four used shortened versions of longer scales and just under half used a published test specifically constructed to provide quick information about intellectual functioning. Wechsler subtest short forms were the most frequent abbreviation while the Peabody Picture Vocabulary…

  • Two- And Four-Subtest Short Forms of the Wais-R

    Anthony Thompson, Anthony P Thompson•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1999

Short forms of WAIS–R using selected subtests were investigated with 80 university student volunteers. The short forms included Silverstein's (1982) two- and four-subtest short forms and the quick two- and four-subtest short forms of Kaufman, Ishikuma, and Kaufman-Packer (1991). The accuracy of short-form IQ estimates were compared for the short form administered first followed by the remaining subtests and the short form included in a standard f…

  • Comparison of Wais—R and Wisc—III Scores with a Sample of 16-Year-Old Youth

    Open Access•Anthony P Thompson, Daniela D Sota•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1998

Scores on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition (WISC-III) were compared for 46 youth in the overlapping 16-yr.-age range. Students were administered the tests in a counterbalanced order with an average retest interval of 40 days. Self-reported grade average was also obtained from students. Criteria for parallel tests (equal means, equal variances, equal covariances) were…

  • Subtest Scatter Is Not an Indicator of Inaccuracy for Short-Form Estimates of Iq

    Anthony P Thompson•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1992

The range of scaled scores does not provide information about the inaccuracy of estimates of IQ based on short forms of the test. Subtest scatter on a short form of an intelligence test may justify the complete administration for elaborative or clinical reasons. The criteria for reliable and abnormal ranges of scores for estimates based on short forms are calculable and should be examined to evaluate their usefulness

  • Extramarital sex

    Anthony P Thompson•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1983

Research literature in the field of extramarital sex (EMS) is reviewed. Initially, definitional problems which reveal the need for increased rigor in specifying the sexual behavior under consideration, the dyad or group outside of which the behavior occurs, and the consensual or non‐consensual nature of the behavior are discussed. Twelve surveys of EMS are examined and the limitations of incidence rate figures discussed. Empirical studies have at…

  • Conceptual, computational and attitudinal correlates of student performance in introductory statistics

    Open Access•Anthony P Thompson, L Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Psychologist•1982•References: 2

One hundred and twenty-one social science students enrolled in an introductory statistics course were administered four paper and pencil measures which were chosen as operational indices of conceptual, computational and attitudinal skill areas. Multiple regression analyses showed that measures of self-confidence, deduction and numeracy accounted for 49.4% of the variance of final statistics grade (p < .001). The assessment and role of these varia…
