Is ‘deep-water formation’ in the Baltic Sea a key to understanding seabed dynamics and ventilation changes over the past 7,000 years
A late Holocene molecular hydrogen isotope record of the East Asian Summer Monsoon in Southwest Japan
Precipitation in Japan is strongly affected by the East Asian monsoon system, resulting in wet summer conditions and relatively dry winter conditions. Few paleo-monsoon records exist from northeastern Asia, especially records showing decadal- to centennial-scale variability. Here we present a molecular hydrogen isotope (δD) record from Lake Kaiike, a small coastal lake in southwest Japan, to provide insight into monsoonal precipitation over the p…
Palaeohydrological controls on sedimentary organic matter in an Amazon floodplain lake, Lake Maracá (Brazil) during the late Holocene
In order to understand the impact of hydrological changes of the Amazon River on sedimentary organic matter (OM) composition in Amazonian floodplain lakes, three sediment cores were collected from Lake Maracá (eastern Amazonia) along a transect from the Amazon River main channel to inland. The cores were dated with 14 C accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and studied by x-ray, mineralogical composition, total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrog…
A 25,000-year record of climate-driven vegetation change in the lowland savanna of eastern equatorial Africa revealed by the carbon-isotopic signature of fossil plant leaf waxes
Mid- to late-Holocene coastal environmental changes in southwest Florida, USA
During the Holocene, Florida experienced major changes in precipitation and runoff. To better understand these processes, shallow marine sediment cores from Charlotte Harbor (southwest Florida) were studied, covering approximately the past 9000 years. Whole core XRF scanning was applied to correlate different sediment cores on a river to sea transect. Biomarkers were used to identify periods with increased runoff and primary productivity. The mid…
Impact of lateral transport on organic proxies in the Southern Ocean
Lateral transport of fine-grained organic carbon particles can complicate the interpretation of paleoclimate records based on organic proxies. Here we investigated the effect of lateral transport on newly developed temperature and soil organic matter proxies, TEX 86 and BIT index, respectively, in core MD88–769 recovered from the South East Indian Ridge. Our results show that TEX 86 and BIT records in comparison to diatom and foraminifera records…
The demise of the alga Botryococcus braunii from a Norwegian fjord was due to early eutrophication
In the sedimentary record of the permanently anoxic Drammensfjord, a suite of lipid biomarkers that are derived from the alga Botryococcus braunii (Kiutzing), botryococcenes, is present in varying amounts, but absent in sediments deposited after AD 1850. The disappearance is concurrent with the industrialization of sawmills and the introduction of paper and pulp mills along the river Drammen and upstream water bodies, and the related increase of …
Response of an ombrotrophic bog to a regional climate event revealed by macrofossil, molecular and carbon isotopic data
We examined the variations in vegetation, organic carbon isotopic compositions and biomarker distributions spanning a well-constrained climatic shift in a Sub-Boreal Dutch raised bog. The macrofossils record a vegetation shift from a predominance of degraded Ericaceae rootlets to a predominance of well-preserved Sphagnum species, first S. cuspidatum, followed by S. imbricatum. This shift, as well as evidence from other macrofossils and fungal spo…
