Racism and the social system
This essay offers a set of reflections on Nasar Meer’s significant new study The Cruel Optimism of Racial Justice. The book begins from the premise that racism is systemic. The production of racial injustice, Meer tells us, is conventional not exceptional. Similarly, campaigns for racial justice are routinely characterised by disappointment and failure. From these stark beginnings, Meer charts an account of the stubborn persistence of racial inju…
Antisemitism, racism, revolution
In this essay, I respond to Alana Lentin, Yair Wallach, David Renton and Andrew Sloin, who have each written reviews of my book Antisemitism and the Russian Revolution for this symposium. Taken together, I suggest that their contributions raise important issues in the study of antisemitism past and present. In particular, their commentaries draw attention to the ever-pressing issue of the relationship between antisemitism and other forms of racis…

Labour and Antisemitism
In this article, we argue that Labour’s antisemitism crisis has been misunderstood. We suggest that a more accurate and sophisticated understanding of antisemitism offers a way forward. There are three elements to this claim. First, by drawing on existing data on attitudes towards Jews, we criticise the widespread focus on individual ‘antisemites’, rather than on the broader problem of antisemitism. In turn, we conceive of antisemitism not as a v…
Racism, Crisis, Brexit
This article offers a conjunctural analysis of the financial and political crisis within which Brexit occurred with a specific attentiveness to race and racism. Brexit and its aftermath have been overdetermined by racism, including racist violence. We suggest that the Leave campaign secured its victory by bringing together two contradictory but inter-locking visions. The first comprises an imperial longing to restore Britain's place in the world …

Revolution and antisemitism
McGeever's essay offers an analysis of the Bolshevik encounter with antisemitism in 1917. Antisemitism was the dominant modality of racialized Othering in late imperial Russia. Yet 1917 transformed Jewish life, setting in motion a sudden and intense period of emancipation. In Russian society more generally, the dramatic escalation of working-class mobilization resulted not only in the toppling of the Tsar in February, but the coming to power of t…

Marxism, racism and the construction of 'race' as a social and political relation
n Robert Miles made a significant contribution to the field of racism and ethnic studies. In his early work, Miles drew upon structuralist Marxist theorizations of capitalism to offer a historically informed analysis of racism and migrant labour (Miles, 1982). This perspective placed political economy at the centre of the study of racism. In addition, Miles? critical discussions with other influential contemporaries such as Paul Gilroy and Stuart…
