FDI , financial constraint and partial ownership
This study uses matched firm‐bank‐FDI data from 1989 to 2016 to explore how a firm's financial constraints affect its foreign affiliate ownership structure choice. Importantly, it tests the hypothesis that parent firms with banks as their largest shareholders hold lower ownership shares in their foreign subsidiaries, in part due to typical bank risk‐averse behaviour. The empirical analysis confirms that foreign subsidiary ownership ratios are neg…

FDI, ownership structure, and productivity
The standard firm heterogeneity model of FDI considers the case of whole ownership of foreign affiliates. However, there exist many partially-owned foreign affiliates. This paper builds a model based on Helpman et al. (2004) to allow various ownership structures and posits some testable hypotheses on the relationship between productivity and ownership shares/structures. The empirical part corroborates these hypotheses, showing that high productiv…
Physical Functions among Children before and during the Covid-19 Pandemic
One major impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children's lifestyles is the lack of exercise owing to activity restrictions. However, information regarding the way in which physical functions among children decline under these circumstances remains scarce. In this study, we compared the physical functions and life habits among children before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan. The participants involved 40 children aged between 9-15 years (2…
Impacts of increased Chinese imports on Japan’s labor market
Wholesalers, indirect exports, geography, and economies of scope
Indirect trade and direct trade
This paper attempts to establish stylised facts on direct and indirect trade and its relationship with firm performance using firm transaction data of Japanese firms, with the special goal of shedding light on regional aspects of indirect exports/imports. The major findings are as follows: (a) firms in regional areas are smaller in size than those in a metropolitan area, and firms in regional areas are less likely to participate in export or impo…
Labor Market Impacts of Import Penetration from China and Regional Trade Agreement Partners
Many studies have investigated the impact of imports, especially those from China, on the domestic labor market. In this paper, we empirically examine the effects of not only imports from China but also those from regional trade agreement (RTA) partners on employment in Japan. To this end, we decomposed the total import penetration into the import penetration under the most favored nation (MFN) and RTA regimes. To address the endogeneity concern …
Effect of the Covid-19 Emergency on Physical Function among School-Aged Children
In April 2020, the Japanese government declared a state of emergency due to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Schools were closed and a stay-at-home order was issued in April and May 2020. This before-and-after study aimed to measure the effects of these COVID-19-related restrictions on physical function among Japanese children. The study included children aged 6-7 years, enrolled before and after the emergency declaration. Their body fat…
On Anatolios in the Geoponika
Most scholars believe that the “Anatolios” appearing in the Geoponika is Vindanius Anatolius of Berytus (Beirut) and the prefect of Illyricum of that name from Berytus mentioned by Ammianus Marcellinus. In this paper we shall examine the hypothesis that Cassianus probably identified Οὐϊνδανιώνιος, ̓Aνατόλιος and Βηρύτιος as three authors, and that Photios by mistake interpreted Οὐϊνδανιώνιος, ̓Aνατόλιος and Βηρύτιος as one author. Finally, we can…
