Trade liberalisation, imperfect pass-through and cost of living: Evidence from Chinese cities
This article investigates the consumption effect of trade liberalisation through changes in the cost of living in Chinese cities. We use fixed effects model and dynamic panel model based on household survey data from 2002 to 2009. We identify the imperfect passthrough mechanism of tariffs and non-tariff measures at city level. The main findings show that the aggregate cost of living in Chinese cities is an inverted-V trend. Tariffs reduction and …
A quantitative evaluation of water resource management policies in China based on the PMC index model
Water policies play a critical role in good water governance and sustainable water development. The evaluation of water policies helps improve the quality of water policy systems and water governance. This study quantitatively evaluated water resource management policies through the policy modeling consistency (PMC) index model and a text-mining method based on national water resource management policy texts produced from 2011 to 2019. This study…
Adaptive water governance research in social sciences journals: A bibliometric analysis
Adaptive water governance plays an increasingly important role in sustainable urban development and water governance response to global climate change. To comprehensively understand the research situation and development trend of adaptive water management, this study conducts a systematic literature review of articles published in International Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) journals based on bibliometric analysis. The results show that ad…
The role of global value chain participation in geographic concentration by export destinations: Empirical evidence from Chinese firm-level data
This study empirically investigates the nexus between global value chain participation and geographic concentration by export destinations. We follow the recent theoretical framework of Antras and Gortari (2020) and Pflüger and Tabuchi (2019), which allows us to determine a link between global value chain participation and geographic concentration by export destinations with trade cost reduction and dispersive effect in the global value chains. U…
Determinants of City Choice of Foreign Direct Investment into China: The Role of Specialisation, Diversification and Competition Externalities
In this paper we study empirically the determinants of location of inward FDI in China at the city level using firm‐level data for the period 1999–2009. In particular, we focus on the role of specialisation, diversification and competition externalities having controlled for the extensive set of city and regional characteristics including the regional market potential. We estimate both the conditional and multinomial logit models. We find that ag…
Spatial representations and policy implications of industrial co-agglomerations, a case study of Beijing
Industrial parks have been tested in various regions around the world, in attempt to foster innovation and fuel economic growth. Despite the importance of industry co-agglomerations in regional growth, few studies examine them in regional geographic space. This paper combines exploratory spatial data analysis and input–output method to explore the spatial pattern of key industrial co-agglomerations in Beijing, which is illustrated by location, fu…
Prescription Stimulant Abuse on University Campuses
Prescription stimulant drug abuse among college students has increasingly become a concern over the last decade for college and university officials in the United States. Students use stimulant medications for nonmedical reasons including staying awake to study, staying awake to socialize, increasing energy, and losing weight. Substance abuse literature ranks stimulants first among the drugs commonly abused on college campuses. In response, we ex…
