  • Italy’s Sea

    Mark I Choate•ARTICLE•Mediterranean Studies•2022

This book, Italy’s Sea, takes as its centerpiece the neglected history of Italy’s twentieth-century colonial rule over the Dodecanese Islands, including ancient Rhodes and Patmos. Valerie McGuire turns this focus into a fascinating narrative that embraces much of the Mediterranean Sea, including Italy, Libya, Greece, and Turkey. Italy’s attempts to create a new Mediterranean identity carry over into today’s discussions of migration and colonial l…

  • A xel K örner . America in Italy

    Open Access•Mark I Choate•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2019

American studies have a long tradition in Europe, though Europeans’ perspectives are often neglected by Americans themselves. Axel Körner’s America in Italy: The United States in the Political Thought and Imagination of the Risorgimento, 1763–1865 contributes to an understanding of how the United States was studied and imagined in Italy, from the Enlightenment and the formation of the U.S. Constitution, through the unification of Italy in the Ris…

  • Simone Cinotto. Soft Soil, Black Grapes

    Mark I Choate•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2014

This beautifully typeset book, with well-chosen black and white illustrations, draws the reader into the entrepreneurial spirit and immigrant group dynamics behind the success of California Italian wines. Engagingly written, Simone Cinotto's account deserves a wide distribution among economic, cultural, and migration historians and all who love wine. The book blends rich and colorful descriptions of food history with business intrigues and family…

  • Italy at Home and Abroad After 150 Years

    Mark I Choate•ARTICLE•Italian Culture•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Shortly after unification in the Risorgimento, mass emigration stretched Italy in unforeseen ways, changing its culture, economics, and politics, and even its state, territory, language, and population. This enforced globalization polarized Italy and radically changed Italy as a nation-state and as a national culture. Controversies over emigration sharply divided Italian Liberals from the Nationalists and Fascists. The ideals of the nation-state,…

  • Identity Politics and Political Perception in the European Settlement of Tunisia

  • Sending States' Transnational Interventions in Politics, Culture, and Economics

    Open Access•Mark I Choate•ARTICLE•International Migration Review•2007•Cited by: 8•References: 41

This article uses archival evidence to study in depth the historical policies of Italy as a classic sending state. Most of the mass migrations of a century ago came from multinational empires, but Italy was a recently formed independent state. Ambitious to benefit from emigration while assisting and protecting emigrants, Italy reached out to “Italians abroad” in several ways. For example, the state opened a low-cost channel for remittances throug…

  • From territorial to ethnographic colonies and back again

    Open Access•Mark I Choate•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2003

For Italy, unprecedented mass migration in the late nineteenth century overshadowed the European Scramble for Africa. To secure Italy's place in the new imperial order, Francesco Crispi proposed to harness emigration for colonial expansion, by settling Italy's East African colonies with the surplus Italian population. Defeat at Adwa in 1896 shattered Crispi's project, and turned attention to colonial possibilities elsewhere. Luigi Einaudi and oth…
