Issues of Pastiche and Illusions of Authenticity in Gamelan-Inspired Composition
This article reconsiders some of the issues surrounding new music for the Javanese gamelan, principally by western composers, and is largely based on personal experience of working with them, most notably the late Lou Harrison (probably the most distinguished such composer). After a brief historical summary, indicating different responses to the gamelan since Debussy, the paper focuses on some of the problems confronting the composer in recent ti…
Colonialism, Philology, and Musical Ethnography in Nineteenth-Century India
S. W. Fallon (1817–80), best known as a compiler of Hindustani dictionaries, submitted a detailed proposal to the Government of Bengal in 1873 for an extensive collection of Indian folksongs, of which he provided a classification. Although the outcome of the proposal is uncertain, his expressed aims alone are remarkable, in their relationship to the colonial enterprise and, more especially, for the ways in which they anticipate major concerns of …

Melodic Paradoxes in the Music of the Thai pi-phat and Javanese gamelan
The two musical cultures of Thailand and Java, especially as conveyed by the leading percussion ensembles (the Thai pi-phat and the Javanese gamelan), share several important concepts, as well as obvious physical similarities between the instruments themselves. Studies by Becker (1968, 1980) draw attention to the “musical family” of Southeast Asia, especially to similarities within “bronze gong cultures” in that region (Becker 1980: 453). One of …

Music in Umeda Village, New Guinea
meda is one of four villages, the other three being Punda, Sowanda, and Waina-Wyalla, which make up the Waina-Sowanda census area in the West Sepik District of New Guinea, lying between the Bewani and Border Mountains and close to the West Irian border. The population of the Waina-Sowanda area is sparse, because it is one of the less ecologically favoured regions of New Guinea. In 1969 the population of the whole area numbered only about 960 indi…
The Encyclopaedia of Music and Dance in India
It is hardly necessary to labor the point that Indian Music, with its wealth of technical terms, instruments and exponents, needs its Dr. Grove. The demand for a reference book comes from students, teachers, critics and musicologists not only in India but throughout the world. Modest attempts have been made to meet this demand but North Indian music has not yet been dealt with in any way to compare with Professor Sambamurthy's Dictionary of South…
