It is hardly necessary to labor the point that Indian Music, with its wealth of technical terms, instruments and exponents, needs its Dr. Grove. The demand for a reference book comes from students, teachers, critics and musicologists not only in India but throughout the world. Modest attempts have been made to meet this demand but North Indian music has not yet been dealt with in any way to compare with Professor Sambamurthy's Dictionary of South Indian Music
