The Stress of Aircraft Carrier Landings
Serum and urine cortisol levels were measured in Navy pilots and their flight officers during aircraft carrier landing practice in the two-man F-4B jet aircraft. The pilots showed a considerable adrenal cortical stress response; the flight officers did not. The complex and dangerous task of carrier landing appears to be a greater stress on the pilot in control of the aircraft than on his passive partner. These findings suggest that in acute stres…
The Stress of Aircraft Carrier Landings
As a possible reflection of central norepinephrine metabolism, urine MHPG excretion was measured in naval aviators during aircraft carrier landing practice, a complex task and a stress of considerable magnitude. Mean urine MHPG was significantly increased after both day and night carrier landings compared to a nonflying control day. These findings suggest that there may be an accelerated metabolism of brain norepinephrine under conditions of heig…
Differential Adrenocortical Stress Responses in Naval Aviators during Aircraft Carrier Landing Practice
Serum Cortisol levels were measured in 9 Navy pilots and their flight officers during aircraft carrier landing practice in the two-man F-4B jet aircraft. The pilots showed an unequivocal adrenocortical stress response; the flight officers did not. The complex and hazardous task of carrier landing appears to be a considerably greater stress on the “executive” naval aviator (the pilot in control of the aircraft) than on his passive partner, althoug…
Excretion of 17-Hydroxycorticosteroids and Vanillylmandelic Acid During 205 Hours of Sleep Deprivation in Man
Previous studies of adrenocortical activity during sleep deprivation revealed unchanged or lowered plasma 17-hydroxycorticosteroid (17-OHCS) levels and either unchanged, lowered, or elevated urine 17-OHCS values, depending on the subject and the length of the deprivation period. In the present study, plasma 17-OHCS, urine 17-OHCS, and urine vanillymandelic acid (VMA) were measured during 205 hr. of wakefulness, the rationale being that an extende…
Adrenal Cortical Activity Changes During Underwater Demolition Team Training
One-third of a Navy UDT class (32 men) was followed by thrice-weekly psychological assessment and measurement of serum cortisol until they dropped from training or graduated. Mean cortisol values for the 20 men who completed the course ranged between 20 and 26 μg%. Against this background of chronically elevated levels, transient increases in serum cortisol occurred coincident with the introduction of new equipment (face mask, swim fins, SCUBA, w…
Hydroxycorticosteroid and Vanillylmandelic Acid Excretion in a Rapidly Cycling Manic-Depressive
Twenty-four-hour urine specimens were collected daily from a rapidly cycling manic-depressive patient throughout a 3-month hospitalization, and were analyzed for volume, osmolality, creatinine, 17-OHCS, and VMA. Mean 17-OHCS excretion was significantly greater during depression than during hypomania, but only in the latter half of hospitalization, after the patient had become acclimatized to the hospital. Mean VMA excretion was significantly incr…
