Promoting elementary students’ computer science conceptual knowledge and coding performance
This mixed-methods study reported how teaching core CS concepts through coordinated unplugged and plugged activities improved elementary students’ coding performances. Through collaborative design with elementary teachers, we developed 14 activities focusing on data, conditional logic, and variables and implemented them with 13 fourth- and fifth-grade students in Spring 2025. Using a convergent mixed methods approach, we analyzed students’ pre-, …
Engaging students of color in physiological computing with insights from eye-tracking
Computing involving physiological data such as heart rate and electrodermal activity has been used as a way to enrich K-12 students’ computing learning experiences. This study explored a novel way to engage elementary students of color as “developers” through a series of physiological computing lessons during a summer learning program. Learners used real-time physiological data (i.e. muscle energy) as computer inputs to build computer programs. T…
Physiological Computing for All
Community + Culture features practitioner perspectives on designing technologies for and with communities. We highlight compelling projects and provocative points of view that speak to both community technology practice and the interaction design field as a whole. --- Sheena Erete, Editor
Complexity in sign languages
Sign languages are human communication systems that are equivalent to spoken language in their capacity for information transfer, but which use a dynamic visual signal for communication. Thus, linguistic metrics of complexity, which are typically developed for linear, symbolic linguistic representation (such as written forms of spoken languages) do not translate easily into sign language analysis. A comparison of physical signal metrics, on the o…

The Art of Interactive Design
An understanding of what makes things interactive is key to the successful creation of websites, computer games, and software. In The Art of Interactive Design, Chris Crawford explains what interactivity is, how it works, why it's important, and how to design good software and websites that are truly interactive. Crawford's colloquial, conversational style makes it easy to grasp the fundamentals and the theoretical underpinnings of interactivity,…
