  • Poverty and parental discipline

Open Access•Mo Alloush, Emily Conover et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2025•References: 8

Across and within countries, there are large differences in how parents discipline their children, and frequently, poverty is associated with higher levels of physical punishment. We leverage the roll-out of a conditional cash transfer program in Peru to test whether its introduction changes parental discipline practices. • Income, Psychological Well-Being, and the Dynamics of Poverty

    Mo Alloush•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 57

Evidence across disciplines suggests a bidirectional relationship between psychological and economic well-being and indicates a possible feedback loop that can reinforce poverty. Estimation of these causal links, however, is difficult because of this simultaneity. I use a panel generalized method of moments approach and a large-scale dataset from South Africa to estimate a system of dynamic equations where income and psychological well-being are …

  • Do Shocks and Environmental Factors Shape Personality Traits? Evidence from the Ultra-Poor in Uganda

Shikhar Mehra, Yaniv Stopnitzky et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2023

In this paper, we study the short-term effects of two kinds of shocks on measured personality traits among young…

Mo Alloush, Shinyi Wu•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 50

This paper estimates the causal impact of income on life satisfaction for a broad sample of individuals in a developing country. Using a large and representative panel survey of South African residents, we find that receipt of the Older Person’s Grant—a means-tested cash transfer that is given to residents age 60 and older regardless of labor force status—increases several household-level measures of economic well-being, resulting in a large and …
