McGhee Get Out of Our Country ( Megi Histalek Me'Artsenu ) Anti-Imperialism in Theory and Practice of 1950s Israeli Communism
The Israeli state’s territorial integrity have generally been associated with and attributed to the Zionist right. This article considers Israeli territorial nationalism from the perspective of the most radical critics of Zionism, Israeli Communists. Studying a plurality of cultural and political practices primarily from the early state period, ranging from ideological writing to street rallies and demonstrations against British and American offi…
Settler-Colonialism and Empire-Building in Palestine/Israel, 1920–1956
As Israel is engaged in one of the bloodiest chapters of its history, this article delves into the economic and political discursive structures of the Zionist project. Critically using settler-colonial theory and V.I. Lenin’s analysis of European imperialism, I argue that imperialism and empire-building were not forces external to Zionism but internal to its ideological and economic practices. By analyzing the way capital was transferred to pre-1…
Shirat hano’ar h’kommunisti: Exploring the cultural dynamics and influence in the songs of Israeli-Jewish Communist youth in Palestine/Israel
Settler colonial projects are not only focused on the economy of a population and the formation of a settler state, they are also cultural undertakings whereby the settlers form their own settler culture. In this article, we explore the dynamics of Zionist settler culture from the point of view of its most radical critics, Jewish-Israeli Communists. We analyze the ways Zionist settler culture has been both absorbed and negated by BANKI (Young Isr…
Kommunist omed ve-shar (A Communist Stands and Sings): On Israel’s Ron Workers’ Choir
At first glance Jewish Israeli Communists and SLI (Songs of the Land of Israel) make strange bedfellows. Communist Party members would seem to be the last to sing songs that glorify the Land of Israel using Zionist tropes. Yet they did. Since the end of World War II, the Ron Workers’ Choir, which was affiliated with the Communist Party, sang SLI songs and performed on international stages in the Socialist Bloc and in Israel. This amateur choir, i…
Rethinking Settler Colonialism: A Marxist Critique of Gershon Shafir
In recent years, the use of settler colonialism as an analytical framework to understand the Zionist-Palestinian conflict has become prevalent. Spurred by the works of such scholars as Patrick Wolfe and Lorenzo Veracini, critical scholarship has argued that Israel as a settler-colonial society sought to eliminate the indigenous Palestinians in a bid to create a Jewish settler nation-state. The grounds for understanding the Zionist-Palestinian con…
Colonialism and imperialism in Communist thinking in Palestine/Israel, 1919–1965
The history of Communism in Palestine/Israel can be seen as an attempt to effect an Arab-Jewish anti-imperialist struggle. This article – which is informed by the literature about settler colonialism and Palestinian nationalism – portrays the way in which local Communists viewed nationalism, Zionism and imperialism. It argues that Palestinian and Jewish Communists did not fully comprehend Zionist settler colonialism and Palestinian nationalism
War and Memory: The Israeli Communist Commemoration of the Spanish Civil War, 1936–1986
The Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939 aroused strong responses in the Jewish Yishuv in Palestine. The support for the Spanish Republic—prevalent in the Zionist left as well as among the Communists—resulted in young Jews and Arabs volunteering to fight in Spain. These volunteers, primarily Jewish Communists, became part of a cult created around the war by the Communist Party. This article will examine the content of this cult while relating it to par…
Judaism and communism: Hanukkah, Passover, and the Jewish Communists in Mandate Palestine and Israel, 1919–1965
This article explores the mythological, ritualistic, and symbolic aspects of the ways in which the festivals of Hanukkah and Passover were celebrated by the Jewish Communists in Mandate Palestine and the State of Israel. It illustrates how elements of Zionist-socialist culture were adopted by Jewish Communists and integrated in their cultural activities. In a gradual process starting in the1920s and culminating in the mid-1960s, the Jewish Commun…
