The year 1989 marked the eight centenary of the canonization of St Stephen Muret, founder of the order of Grandmont. While Plantagenet patronage of the Grandmontines is well known, and recent research has evaluated the charter evidence, the reasons for Henry II's interest in the order remain obscure.
