The year 1989 marked the eight centenary of the canonization of St Stephen Muret, founder of the order of Grandmont. While Plantagenet patronage of the Grandmontines is well known, and recent research has evaluated the charter evidence, the reasons for Henry II's interest in the order remain obscure. In this paper attention is focused upon two enamelled plaques which have been identified with the high altar at Grandmont and are now in the Musée Cluny. Consideration is given to the Grandmontine writings and to the personalities of the saint, his disciple, Hugh de Lacerta, and the priors of Grandmont. The background of events in the Limousin is explored together with Henry II's part in the canonization process. In this context it is suggested that the interpretation of the Cluny panels adds to our understanding of Henry's patronage of the order of Grandmont
