  • Writing and Reading Subjects: Fixing and Unfixing Identity through Close Literary Practices

Claire Robson, Dennis Sumara et al.•ARTICLE•Changing English•2010

For a number of years, Rebecca Luce‐Kapler and Dennis Sumara have been investigating the ways in which literary practices of close reading can help change how we think and how we remember. They have also considered how such practices might help make us more critical of normative representations of remembered experience. More recently, they have been joined by Claire Robson, who works with and investigates memoir writing. In 2009, Robson and Sumar…

  • Holocene sea-level change in the Severn Estuary, southwest England: A diatom-based sea-level transfer function for macrotidal settings

    Open Access•Tom Hill, Thomas C B Hill et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 7

The recent growth in the use of microfossil-based transfer functions in late-Quaternary sea-level reconstructions reflects their potential to accurately quantify palaeo sea-level changes. This study details the development of a diatom-based sea-level transfer function for the Severn Estuary, southwest England, a macrotidal setting that experiences the second highest tidal range in the world. This setting presents difficulties in representing the …

  • The social construction of racism: The case of second generation Bangladeshis

    Open Access•Bipasha Ahmed, Paula Nicolson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community & Applied…•2000•References: 6

This paper examines the ways in which a group of middle class second generation Bangladeshi adults construct and account for their experiences of racism. Using a discursive analysis of tape recorded conversations, the study shows how various discursive practices construct racism in participant's descriptions of racist experiences, and how these constructions serve particular functions. For instance, the discourses of an ‘improved present’ and ‘ra…

  • Rapid coastal change during the mid- to late Holocene: The record of barrier estuary sedimentation in the Romney Marsh region, southeast England

    Open Access•C D Spencer, Chris Spencer et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1998•Cited by: 4•References: 3

A common problem facing sea-level researchers lies in determining the cause of rapid changes observed in coastal stratigraphic sequences. Such changes are commonly ascribed to the interaction of processes that operate over differing temporal and spatial scales, i.e. rapid local and regional sea-level trends and storm magnitude/frequency. At least some of the difficulty in distinguishing between these processes lies in the often limited stratigrap…
