  • Evaluation of a computer‐assisted letter sound tutoring program

Open Access•Stephanie Long, Robert J Volpe et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology in the Schools•2023

The importance of letter sound knowledge (LSK) as a precursor to later literacy skills has been well‐documented. Since English language learners (ELLs), or students who first acquired a language other than English, continue to underperform in reading compared to their English‐speaking peers, they are particularly at‐risk for reading and academic difficulties. The current study examines the utility and acceptability of teaching letter sounds to fo…

  • National Radon Action Plans in Europe and Need of Effectiveness Indicators

Open Access•F Bochicchio, David Fenton et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Protection of the population and of workers from exposure to radon is a unique challenge in radiation protection. Many coordinated actions and a variety of expertise are needed. Initially, a National Radon Action Plan (NRAP) has been developed and implemented by some countries, while it is currently recommended by international organizations (e.g., World Health Organization) and required by international regulations, such as the European Council …

  • A Study of Natural Radioactivity Levels and Radon/Thoron Release Potential of Bedrock and Soil in Southeastern Ireland

Open Access•Mirsina Mousavi Aghdam, Quentin Crowley et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Radon ( 222 Rn) and thoron ( 220 Rn) account for almost two-thirds of the annual average radiation dose received by the Irish population. A detailed study of natural radioactivity levels and radon and thoron exhalation rates was carried out in a legislatively designated "high radon" area, as based on existing indoor radon measurements. Indoor radon concentrations, airborne radiometric data and stream sediment geochemistry were collated, and a set…

  • Exploring the Alignment of Behavior Screening Policies and Practices in US Public School Districts

    Open Access•Emily R Auerbach, Sandra M Chafouleas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of School Health•2020

BACKGROUND: Although recent studies provide information regarding state-level policies and district-level practices regarding social, emotional, and behavioral screening, the degree to which these policies influence screening practices is unknown. As such, the purpose of this exploratory study was to compare state- and district-level policies and reported practices around school-based social, emotional, and behavioral screening. METHODS: We obtai…

  • Supervisors’ Perception of Vicarious Trauma and Growth in Australian Refugee Trauma Counsellors

    Stephanie Long•ARTICLE•Australian Social Work•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Vicarious trauma is a well-accepted phenomenon supported by more than 20 years of research, yet the body of research on the positive impact, known as vicarious post-traumatic growth, is relatively small. Based on a metasynthesis of qualitative peer-reviewed vicarious trauma studies, Cohen and Collens propose a model of the co-occurrence of vicarious trauma and vicarious post-traumatic growth. This model was examined through a qualitative study in…

  • Individual interviews or focus groups? Interview format and women’s self-disclosure

    Louis J Kruger, Rachel F Rodgers et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2018•Cited by: 7•References: 9

Individual interviews have traditionally been an important method of data collection in multiple disciplines, including psychology. However, research comparing individual interviews with focus groups has generated mixed results regarding which method is more effective in investigating sensitive topics. The purpose of the present study was to directly compare the two methods with respect to young women’s verbalizations on a sensitive topic, namely…

  • Flood extent mapping for Namibia using change detection and thresholding with SAR

Open Access•Stephanie Long, Temilola Fatoyinbo et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2014

A new method for flood detection change detection and thresholding (CDAT) was used with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery to delineate the extent of flooding for the Chobe floodplain in the Caprivi region of Namibia. This region experiences annual seasonal flooding and has seen a recent renewal of severe flooding after a long dry period in the 1990s. Flooding in this area has caused loss of life and livelihoods for the surrounding communitie…
