Science Teaching Efficacy Beliefs of Palestinian Elementary Education Students
To assess elementary education students’ self-efficacy beliefs in science teaching, the Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument developed by Enochs and Riggs was used. The instrument consisted of two scales, Personal Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Scale and the Outcome Expectancy Scale. It was administered to 90 undergraduate university students majoring in elementary education at a large public Palestinian university. Results indicated tha…
Psychometrics of the SDQ-I for Palestinian Adolescent Students
The Self-description Questionnaire–I (SDQ–I) is a multidimensional instrument that measures eight self-concept facets hypothesized in Shavelson’s hierarchical model. This study investigated self-concept in a sample of Palestinian adolescent students using an Arabic version of the SDQ–I. Three-hundred sixty adolescents (163 girls and 197 boys) aged 13 to 16 years (M = 14.3, SD = .87) participated. The 72-item SDQ–I was administered in four Palesti…
Reading Anxiety, Classroom Anxiety, Language Motivation, Reader Self-Perception, and Arabic Achievement of Arab-American Students Learning Arabic as a Second Language
The present study assessed the relations between reading anxiety, classroom anxiety, language motivation, and readers' self-perception for a sample of Arab-American students in Arabic classes. The effects of sex, grade, and years studying Arabic on academic achievement were examined as well. Measures were administered to 118 middle school students (56 boys, 62 girls; M age = 13.0 yr., SD = 0.8), and teachers reported academic grades in Arabic. Re…
Assessment of Learning and Study Strategies of University Students in Qatar Using an Arabic Translation of the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory
413 (119 men, 294 women) undergraduate university students in Qatar completed an Arabic version of the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) measuring Anxiety, Attitude, Concentration, Information Processing, Motivation, Self-testing, Selecting Main Ideas, Study Aids, Time Management, and Test Strategies. The students' learning and study strategies scores were similar to those reported in the literature. Factor analysis indicated the sa…
Self-Esteem and Mathematics Achievement of Elementary Qatari Students
Mathematics achievement and self-esteem of 238 Qatari elementary students (128 girls, 110 boys) was assessed. In Grades 1 to 5, self-esteem was M = 14.3 (SD = 2.7) and mathematics achievement was M = 68.1 (SD = 21.9). Results indicated boys had higher self-esteem. Mathematics achievement and sex explained seven percent of the variance in self-esteem
Self-Esteem and Arab-American Elementary Students
This study assessed self-esteem and the relation between self-esteem and academic achievement in a sample of Arab-American elementary students who completed the What I Think About Myself Self-esteem Inventory. 123 students' (M age = 8.7 yr., 65 boys and 58 girls) self-esteem scores were associated with their academic achievement. Alpha internal consistency reliability was acceptable (Cronbach's α = .85) for the inventory. The results also indicat…
Self-Concept in Lebanese and Arab-American Pre-Adolescents
The present study assessed self-concepts of 102 (35 boys, 67 girls) Arab-American pre-adolescents (M age=11.9 yr., SD=.8) and compared scores with those of 105 (43 boys, 62 girls) Arab national students (M age=12.3 yr., SD=.7) in Lebanon. The Arab-American students scored significantly higher than the group of Arab students in Lebanon on 6 of 8 subscales of Marsh's Self-description Questionnaire-I, suggesting overall higher self-concept on subsca…
Learning Styles and Approaches to Learning Mathematics of Students Majoring in Elementary Education: A Three-Year Study
The goal of this 3-yr. study was to explore the learning styles and approaches to learning mathematics of elementary education majors. Two questionnaires, the Learning Style Inventory and the Approaches to Learning Mathematics Questionnaire, were administered to 149 women and 32 men (M = 20.1 yr., SD. = 2.1; range = 18-31). All were in their first or second years of college and enrolled in Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers at a Midwester…
Attitudes of University Precalculus Students toward Mathematics
To investigate the attitudes of 200 university students (83% freshmen) toward mathematics, a questionnaire was administered to report on their attitudes toward mathematics. Analysis indicated that students studying precalculus had a somewhat positive attitude toward mathematics
Combining Reliability Coefficients: Toward Reliability Generalization of the Conceptions of Mathematics Questionnaire
The combined coefficient alpha from studies reporting the reliability of scores using the Conceptions of Mathematics Questionnaire were computed. Five studies comprising 898 participants were evaluated. A test of differences among the independent coefficients alpha was statistically significant (chi42= 10.38, p = .04) for the Fragmented and (chi42 = 11.58, p = .02) for the Cohesive subscales. Post hoc comparisons showed the difference (F129,299 =…
Internal Consistency Reliability and Validity of the Arabic Translation of the Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs Instrument
The Arabic translation of the Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs was completed by 144 undergraduate students (M age=20.6) in Jordan. The findings support the internal reliability of the Arabic translation of the Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs as well as its construct validity
Internal Consistency Reliability and Construct Validity of an Arabic Translation of the Shortened Form of the Fennema-Sherman Mathematics Attitudes Scales
A sample of 480 (246 boys and 234 girls) students in Grade 11 in the United Arab Emirates completed an Arabic version of the shortened form of the Fennema-Sherman Mathematics Attitudes Scales. A factor analysis of the intercorrelations of responses to 51 items indicated the same general factors as in the original study. Internal consistency estimates of the reliability of scores on the total scale and on each scale for the short form were accepta…
Mathematics Self-Concept and Depression in a Sample of University Education Majors
A Mathematics Content Course and Teaching Efficacy Beliefs of Undergraduate Majors in Education
This study was designed to assess the mathematics teaching efficacy beliefs of undergraduates in elementary education through a manipulative-based course in mathematics. Responses of 106 university undergraduates to the 21-item Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs administered as pre- and posttest without a control group showed a significant immediate postcourse change in their efficacy beliefs using dependent t test
University Students' Approaches to Learning First-Year Mathematics
This study assessed reliability and validity of the Approaches to earning Mathematics Questionnaire, for 218 university students. The study also identified the relationship between subscales. Internal consistency as Cronbach alpha was .77 for the Surface Approach to Learning scale and .88 for the Deep Approach to Learning scale. Principal components analysis yielded a two-factor solution accounting for only 34.6% of variance. The factors were int…
