  • Land Degradation, Climate Change, and Economic Development

Open Access•Jue Zhang, Mei Xiong et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2026

This research paper examines the intricate nexus between land degradation, climate change, and economic development in the People's Republic of China through a rigorous tri‐sectoral analysis. Utilizing a longitudinal dataset sourced from the World Bank World Development Indicators spanning the period from 2000 to 2022 ( annual observations), the study evaluates 10 distinct indicators to quantify the sustainability trap inherent in rapid industria…

  • Association between depressive symptoms and thyroid nodule incidence in women

Open Access•Qijun Liang, Yan Yang et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Women with persistent depressive symptoms had a higher risk of developing TNs, suggesting that mental health status may influence TN development in women

  • Anthropogenic Gd in urban river water

Open Access•Ruiyin Han, Zhuhong Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2021

As an emerging contaminant, rare earth elements (REEs) are becoming an environmental concern, especially in Chinese cities. This study investigated the distribution of REEs in river water and tap water samples in Guiyang, Southwest China. In all water samples, the concentrations of total dissolved REE (∑REE) ranged from 15.1 to 53.3 ng·L–1, with the heavy rare earth elements enriched than the light rare earth elements. Most of the water samples s…

  • Distribution, water quality, and health risk assessment of trace elements in three streams during the wet season, Guiyang, Southwest China

Open Access•Jue Zhang, Qixin Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2021

Trace element pollution derived from human activities in aquatic systems has raised widespread concerns due to its toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation. In this article, we presented a systematic investigation of the anthropogenic overprints on trace elements geochemistry in three streams of the human-impacted (agriculture, urban area, and abandoned mining), located at Lake Aha, Guiyang, Southwest China. Concentrations reported in the study…

  • China–US Strategic Competition and the Descent of a Porous Curtain

Open Access•Jue Zhang, Jin Xu•ARTICLE•The Chinese Journal of…•2021•Cited by: 1

Since the onset of the Coronavirus Disease 2019(COVID-19) global pandemic, Sino–US strategic rivalry has dramatically heightened to a pitch where there is a mounting discussion over whether or not China and the United States have embarked on a “new Cold War.” There are three main views in this regard. The first is that China and the United States have indeed entered a new Cold War; the second is that China and the United States are heading for a …

  • Anthropogenic Rare Earth Elements

Open Access•Jue Zhang, Zhuhong Wang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Rare earth elements (REEs), known as "industrial vitamins", are widely used in medical treatment, industry, agriculture, etc. However, with the increasing demand for REEs, excess REEs, such as gadolinium (Gd), are considered micropollutants in the environment. In this paper, the distributions of dissolved REEs were analyzed in three small streams, in order to determine the extent and occurrence of Gd anomalies. The shale-normalized REE patterns i…

  • Can skilled immigration raise innovation? Evidence from Canadian Cities

Open Access•Joël Blit, Mikal Skuterud et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 1

We examine the effect of changes in skilled-immigrant population shares in 98 Canadian cities on per capita patents. The Canadian case is of interest because its ‘points system’ is viewed as a model of skilled immigration policy. Our estimates suggest that the impact of increasing the university-educated immigrant share on patenting rates is modest at best and unambiguously smaller than the impact of skilled immigrants in the USA. We find larger …

  • An Analysis of the Patenting Rates of Canada’s Ethnic Populations

Joël Blit, Mikal Skuterud et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2018•Cited by: 2

We estimate patenting rates for Canada’s ethnic populations between 1986 and 2011, using inventor names to identify ethnicity and Census and National Household Survey ancestry data to estimate ethnic populations. The results reveal higher patenting rates for Canada’s ethnic minorities, particularly for Canadians with Korean, Japanese, and Chinese ancestry, and suggest that immigrants accounted for one-third of Canadian patents in recent years, de…

  • Opportunism and Election Timing by Canadian Provincial and Federal Governments

Vaughan Dickson, Mike Farnworth et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 7
