Survivability of eastern swamp privet ( Forestiera acuminata ) under prolonged flooding at reservoir margins
Built reservoirs create opportunities for plants that thrive in wet environments to expand beyond their typical range into normally drier settings. A case study from north-central Texas illustrates a dense stand of eastern swamp privet (Forestiera acuminata) at the margin of Lewisville Lake, a built multi-purpose reservoir. The stand has developed despite prolonged (multi-year) flooding and intervening dry spells. A total of 47 inundated plants w…
Waterbirds in constructed suburban wetlands, Eastern Denton County, Texas, USA
Waterbirds were observed at 13 suburban wetlands in the Blackland Prairie of eastern Denton County, Texas, on 45 dates over a year. Five wetlands were built to improve ecosystem services in areas impacted by Lewisville Lake flood control operations; these habitat restoration wetlands were planted with diverse native flora to enhance the recovery of vegetation communities from natural seedbanks. Eight other wetlands, built to manage stormwater in …
Uranium concentrations and chemical associations in the Southern Gulf Coast Aquifer, Texas
Dissolved concentrations of uranium and potentially associated parameters, including nitrate, alkalinity, calcium, iron, manganese, vanadium, and fluoride, were compiled for 65 water wells sampled between 2015 and 2017 in a southern part of the Gulf Coast Aquifer, Texas. Sampled wells ranged from 3.0 m to 762.2 m deep, with a median depth of 120.0 m. Uranium concentrations ranged from less than 1 μg/L to 243 μg/L, with a median concentration of 5…
Estimating inundation patterns in detention wetlands
The objective of this study was to develop and apply a method for estimating hydroperiods in proposed detention wetlands. We applied the method to a riparian mitigation project in north‐central Texas, USA. The approach used in this study incorporates field measurements of hydrologic variables, historical observations, and digital elevation data – all processed in a geographic information system (GIS) linked to a dynamic water budget model. Keywor…
Spatial and temporal patterns of arsenic concentration in the High Plains Aquifer of Texas, USA
Spatial and temporal patterns of dissolved arsenic in groundwater were documented from samples collected at 987 water wells in the High Plains (Ogallala) Aquifer of Texas, USA. Sampled wells had a median depth of 73 m. Historic pesticide and defoliant applications to cotton fields are potential sources of arsenic in the study area. From a survey of samples collected between 2000 and 2004, observed arsenic concentrations ranged from less than 2.0 …
Alpha and beta radioactivity in groundwater of the hickory, mid‐cambrian and ellenburger‐san saba aquifers, central texas, USA
Gross alpha and beta activity in sandstone and limestone aquifers of central Texas locally exceed drinking water standards. The Hickory (sandstone), Mid‐Cambrian (sandstone) and Ellenburger‐San Saba (ESS) (limestone) Aquifers registered median alpha levels of 13, 17 and 4 pCi/l, and median beta levels of 18, 17 and 4.5 pCi/l, respectively. Several observations, 46% (Hickory), 67% (Mid‐Cambrian) and 16% (ESS), exceeded the 15 pCi/l maximum contami…
On‐road Remote Sensing of Motor Vehicle Emissions
On‐road remote sensing operates in real‐time, under real world conditions, making it ideal for detecting high pollution emitters on roads and highways. Remote sensing measurements of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and nitrogen oxide (NO) were compiled from study sites in Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Texas, and Utah. Collectively, the studies took place from 1989 to 1999, producing 278,642 measurements from vehicles manufactu…
Backup Coverage In Groundwater Monitoring Networks
Computer simulations were used to test the contaminant-detection capability of alternative groundwater monitoring networks near a landfill. Double-locus networks, with backup coverage afforded by the downgradient locus, were constructed by shifting wells hydraulically upgradient or downgradient in a single-locus network. Single-and double-locus networks had the same average distance, measured parallel to groundwater flow, between wells and the la…
Arsenic, Nitrate, Chloride And Bromide Contamination In The Gulf Coast Aquifer, South-Central Texas, USA
Arsenic, nitrate, chloride, and bromide concentrations in the Gulf Coast Aquifer of south-central Texas, USA, were compiled, mapped, and evaluated in the context of local land use and geology. Agriculture and oil production are predominant land uses and potential sources of groundwater contamination in the study area. Data were compiled from 69 wells with a median depth of 160.5 v m. Eight observations surpassed the 44.3 v mg/L standard for nitra…
Sodium adsorption ratios and salinity levels in nine texas aquifers
This study evaluated sodium and salinity irrigation hazards for Texas’ nine major aquifers. Sodium adsorption ratios (SAR's) and electrical conductivity levels (EC's) were calculated at 5,442 water wells. Aquifer median SAR's varied widely, from 0.3 (Edwards Balcones Fault Zone) to 8.5 (Carrizo‐Wilcox). The percentage of SAR observations exceeding 17.5 ranged from 0.0 (Seymour Aquifer) to 36.3 (Carrizo‐Wilcox Aquifer). There was a significant pos…
Nitrate and chloride concentrations in the high plains aquifer, Texas
Groundwater nitrate and chloride concentrations were compiled for 122 wells in a rural, three‐county area of northwest Texas. The counties are located on the High Plains aquifer, a major source of groundwater in the region. Cropland/pasture is the predominant land use in the study area. The area also contains numerous cattle feedlots. Fertilizer and manure associated with those land uses are potential sources of ground‐water contamination. Althou…

Comparison of injection well patterns for remediating benzene‐contaminated groundwater
Ten alternative injection well patterns and a no‐action plan were evaluated for bioremediating benzene‐contaminated groundwater. Evaluations were made for a silty‐sand aquifer using a contaminant fate and transport model. Wells injected water containing 8 mg/L dissolved oxygen. The study's objective was to rank the alternative schemes based upon mass of contaminant removed and area of residual groundwater contamination. Interior configurations wi…
Influence of landfill shape and orientation on groundwater monitoring efficiency
This study examined the effect of landfill shape and orientation on the potential detection efficiency of groundwater monitoring networks. Three common landfill shapes were arranged at various orientations relative to groundwater flow. The procedure yielded 13 different source configurations. A five‐well monitoring network was designed for each source configuration. All wells were located the same distance (measured parallel to groundwater flow) …
