  • Question-answering processes in reading multiple texts in a second language

Open Access•Yuko Hijikata, Yuko Hoshino et al.•ARTICLE•Language Testing•2026

We studied Japanese English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ cognitive processes when reading two texts and answering intratext or intertext questions, a format that demands attention toward discrete pieces of information across texts. In Experiment 1, 38 Japanese undergraduate and graduate students read 16 pairs of short texts and answered comprehension questions with four options each. Their eye movements were recorded, which was followed …

  • How many L2 word meanings can learners recall? A latent trait approach to vocabulary size estimation

Open Access•Akira Hamada, Yuko Hoshino et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•2024

This study investigated the size of meaning-recall vocabulary knowledge and its variations across word-frequency and second language (L2) proficiency levels. Despite the extensive research history in determining lexical coverage and thresholds for effective L2 use, much of the evidence is based on measures of meaning-recognition vocabulary knowledge. Using a latent-trait approach, we calculated the probability that learners could recall the meani…

  • Robust evidence for the simple view of second language reading

Open Access•Akira Hamada, Haruka Shimizu et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Second Language…•2024

This paper reports a complete secondary analysis of Jeon and Yamashita’s (2022) systematic review to build the second language (L2) model of the simple view of reading (SVR). The same meta-analytic methodologies were maintained, with the exception of applying meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM). This study successfully replicated some of the aggregated correlations but not others, owing to (a) the recoding of the original raw data …
