Analysing how these frameworks have emerged, the ways in which they have become institutionalized, and the processes by which they change is fundamental. Moreover, these frameworks are increasingly challenged by border securitization, limiting or jeopardizing decades of cross-border cooperative gover…

A matter of distance? Retailer acceptance of the US dollar in the Canadian plains
The continued economic integration of North America has connected cross-border shoppers along the US-Canadian border. This paper explores the use of the US dollar in Canadian retail establishments along a geographical spine in Saskatchewan and Alberta, Canada. We find that distance away from the border is inversely related to the rate of US dollar acceptance in Saskatchewan. More important to the acceptance decision, however, is business maturity…
Perspectives on Mercosur borders and border spaces: Implications for border theories
This dossier invites the Journal of Borderlands Studies (JBS) readership to explore Southern Common Market (Mercosur in Spanish and Mercosul in Portuguese-Brazilian) borders and border spaces. During the second half of the 1980s, Brazil and Argentina start negotiations related to regional integration. These talks shortly result in the foundation of the Mercosur. Thus, in 1991, Argentina and Brazil, along with Paraguay and Uruguay, sign the Mercos…
Regional integration and border interactions in the Cuenca Del Plata: Legacies, achievements and challenges for the Mercosur
The Cuenca del Plata covers border territories of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. In other words, all Mercosur members share cross‐border interests in this border space. Due to the regional integration, borders and border spaces have been to a certain extent redefined. The Cuenca del Plata represents a stimulating case‐study to analyse how and how far the cross‐border public action has been adjusted to this new Mercosur deal. Past and cu…
