Get Vaccinated Now, But the Choice is Up to You
Covid-19 is still a major public health issue in the United States and one of the most effective ways to minimize the damage caused by this illness is through encouraging individuals to receive vaccines and keep up with vaccine boosters. However, many individuals remain vaccine-hesitant. The current project examines the most effective way to persuade vaccine hesitant individuals through a textual message-based experiment. Psychological reactance,…
Organ donation messages and psychological reactance
This study compared the effectiveness of script location (preemptive or postscript) and restoration mitigation (restorative or non-restorative) for reducing psychological reactance and increasing message reactions and behavioral intentions versus a control message. Undergraduates (N = 415) completed an online survey experiment promoting signing the organ donor registry. Unexpectedly, no differences were found among the 5 message conditions for th…

Transportation into Audio-visual Narratives
Many scholars use Green and Brock’s (2000) transportation scale to measure the degree to which audiences become absorbed into a narrative. In a pair of studies, we explore if the scale performs the same in relation to text-based versus audio-visual (AV) narratives. In Study 1, 125 participants were exposed to one of two versions (text or AV) of the same narrative. A confirmatory factor analysis indicates that the scale is not unidimensional and t…

The Persuasive Effects of Message Framing in Organ Donation
The effects of message framing on reactions to campaign messages promoting organ donation were examined in three experiments. It was predicted that gain-framed messages would produce more positive reactions toward organ and tissue donation. In Study 1, students (N=189) responded to either a gain-framed or loss-framed message about organ donation. Study 2 (N=318) and Study 3 (N=433) examined the role of psychological reactance as a mediator betwee…
