This study compared the effectiveness of script location (preemptive or postscript) and restoration mitigation (restorative or non-restorative) for reducing psychological reactance and increasing message reactions and behavioral intentions versus a control message. Undergraduates (N = 415) completed an online survey experiment promoting signing the organ donor registry. Unexpectedly, no differences were found among the 5 message conditions for threats to freedom, anger, or behavioral intentions. Significant differences were found for all 4 experimental conditions versus the control condition for negative cognitions. Significant differences were found only between the restorative postscript condition and the non-restorative preemptive condition for message reactions
