Satiric parody through Indian English tweets in Twitter
This paper examines satiric parody in Hinglish tweets that users created in response to the censorship in India of the James Bond movie Spectre . The analysis reveals the creativity with which users conflated two different cultures (Indian and Western) and languages (Hindi and English) in their tweets for a parodic portrayal of James Bond in an Indianized avatar and a satirical criticism of the underlying conservative ideology behind the censorsh…
Persuasive Genres
"This book provides an analysis of persuasive genres in the domain of media, ranging from traditional to new media genres on the Internet. Kathpalia provides a layered analysis of a family of persuasive genres at the functional, semantic and linguistic levels and a reconceptualization of genres as empowering rather than constraining, enabling rather than binding, and dynamic rather than static. The book leads readers to an understanding of genre …

The aim of this study was to examine glocalization in Hinglish TV commercials, specifically those that break and redefine gender stereotypes. World Englishes and cross-cultural advertising
Globalization, along with emerging new media forms, is responsible for the spread of bilingualism and multilingualism in advertising. As English represents the common core of advertising, advertisers view it as the most suitable linguistic vehicle for the globalized world, mixing it with local language(s) in innovative and unique ways in their advertisements depending upon whether they originate from the Inner, Outer or Expanding Circles of Engli…

Although new word formations within a language are considered to be highly creative, combining words from two different languages provides another level of creativity to bilinguals in different situations. The objective of this paper is to examine the main types of word creation processes employe…

The use of code-mixing in Indian billboard advertising
One major area of interest in the study of contemporary linguistic landscapes worldwide is the interaction of English with local languages in public spaces. One such example of this is the use of 'Hinglish' in Indian media, particularly in Indian advertising. Although some researchers have previously investigated Hindi-English code-switching in Bollywood films as well as print advertisements, relatively little research has been done on the interp…
Cross‐cultural Variation in Professional Genres
Although cross‐cultural variation in spoken interaction has been dealt with extensively in discourse studies, very little research has been reported in the case of academic and professional written genres. The importance of this work is highlighted by the findings that writers from different cultures organize and develop ideas differently in expository writing tasks (Hinds, 1990) and that professional genres like business letters (The Geok Suan, …
