  • ‘Muslims do not submit to anyone except the Almighty’: Staying the same and evading prison categories in Chechen prisoners’ experiences in Russia

    Lili Di Puppo•ARTICLE•Identities•2026

The literature on Islam and prison often approaches Islam, and religion more broadly, as changing during incarceration. The literature focuses upon three main aspects emphasizing change: rehabilitation, adaptation (to the prison environment), and radicalization. In this article, I use the case study of Chechen Muslim prisoners in Russia to contrast these aspects. I argue that Islam can also provide support for not changing in prison. Indeed, in t…

  • Between remembrance and forgetfulness: Heart perception, oneness and the human-landscape relationship in a Bashkir Sufi circle

    Open Access•Lili Di Puppo•ARTICLE•Globalizations•2024•References: 9

wIn this article, I explore human-landscape and human-nature relationships from the perspective of Sufi ontologies by examining how Sufi Muslims revive the sacred landscape in Bashkortostan. I foreground an alternative mode of knowing, the heart perception, to analyze how they experience the landscape's aliveness. I argue that this mode of experiencing the natural environment goes further than the idea of the sentience and agency of non-humans in…

  • What does the heart want: Being seen, “heart ethnography,” and knowledge through surrender in a Bashkir Sufi circle in Russia

    Open Access•Lili Di Puppo•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 8

Drawing on fieldwork in a Bashkir Sufi circle in Russia, this article explores my interlocutors’ mode of experiencing the world and transcendence. By letting myself be seen in the field, I let them shape the terms of our encounter as a way of glimpsing their mode of knowing. I explore my fieldwork experience as a transformation of the self in parallel with my interlocutors’ narrations of encounters with saints. I reflect on field experiences in w…

  • Rethinking the anthropological enterprise in light of Muslim ontologies: Secular vestiges, spiritual epistemologies, vertical knowledge

Open Access•F Vicini, Lili Di Puppo•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2024•Cited by: 6•References: 36

Because of the difficulty anthropology continues to face in relinquishing its secular vestiges, field encounters with not-immediately-perceptible reality, the realm of God, the invisible, and the otherworldly have usually been removed or deemed insignificant in anthropological accounts. In dialogue with the ontological turn and other recent developments in anthropology, in this article we introduce the special section on Muslim ontologies by advo…

  • If one is Orthodox, one should not strive for luxury”: Political values and the changing strategies of anti-corruption CSOs in Russia

Francesca Chiarvesio, Lili Di Puppo•ARTICLE•Globalizations•2022•References: 18

By analysing the changing strategies adopted by anti-corruption CSOs in Russia, this article sheds light on the role of political values in the anti-corruption field. We argue that the rise of a conservative discourse in Russia that places greater emphasis on values has created both limitations and opportunities for CSOs. With this ‘conservative turn’, the question of ‘foreign influence’ has gained prominence in political debates. As an effect of…

  • Peripheral methodologies unlearning, not-knowing and ethnographic limits: Unlearning, Not-Knowing and Ethnographic Limits

Francisco Martinez, Lili Di Puppo et al.•BOOK•Peripheral Methodologies•2021

How does peripherality challenge methodology and theory-making? This book examines how the peripheral can be incorporated into ethnographic research, and reflects on what it means to be on the periphery-ontologically and epistemologically. Starting from the premise that clarity and fixity as ideals of modernity prevent us from approaching that which cannot be easily captured and framed into scientific boundaries, the book argues for remaining on …

  • Introduction: Normative orders and the remaking of Muslim spaces and selves in contemporary Russia

    Open Access•Lili Di Puppo, J Schmoller•ARTICLE•Ethnicities•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 28

The aim of this special issue is to explore, from the perspective of various notions of space, the manifold ways in which Muslims in Russia live and practice their religion. We aim to analyse how Muslims in Russia are confronted in the practice of their religion with various conceptual and experiential realms. These realms correspond to certain divisions that they must negotiate and navigate. Examples of these include the boundaries between the s…

  • The paradoxes of a localised Islamic orthodoxy: Rethinking Tatar traditional Islam in Russia

    Open Access•Lili Di Puppo•ARTICLE•Ethnicities•2019•Cited by: 12•References: 17

The question of the process of developing national or local forms of Islam is often approached through the lens of the domestication of Islam and by emphasising the role of the state or Muslim officials close to the state in this process. In my analysis of the process, undertaken by certain Tatar Muslim representatives in Russia, of developing what I call a localised Islamic orthodoxy, I aim to study shifts in the debate on ‘traditional Islam’ to…

  • Islam and Ethnicity in Russia

    Open Access•Lili Di Puppo, J Schmoller•ARTICLE•Anthropological Journal of…•2018

Those who are not all that familiar with Russia might be unaware of its religious diversity and the complex ways in which religion relates to national and ethnic categories. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, the Russian Orthodox Church has managed to regenerate and now exerts a considerable influence on the conservative agenda promoted by the government. But just like Orthodox Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Buddhism are, since 1997, consid…

  • False Signposts and High Climbing

    Open Access•Lili Di Puppo•ARTICLE•Anthropological Journal of…•2018

In Russia, the division between a ‘folk’/‘ethnic’ and ‘doctrinal’ Islam is linked to the Soviet attempts to weaken scholarly religious knowledge. Today, similar to various regions of the Muslim world, certain Tatar Muslims with the madhhab system (Muslim schools of jurisprudence), engage in constructing a localised orthodoxy, an Islamic orthodoxy based on the universal foundations of Islam, while striving to integrate folk customs and traditions …

    Lili Di Puppo•ARTICLE•East European Politics•2014•Cited by: 9•References: 9

This article examines anti-corruption activities in Georgia after the Rose Revolution of November 2003 under the administration of Mikheil Saakashvili. It aims to analyse the existence of different assessments on the country's success in fighting corruption and applies an interpretive framework to study these assessments as "narratives" that reveal the diverging or converging interests of anti-corruption actors in sustaining a common narrative on…

  • Anti-corruption interventions in Georgia

    Lili Di Puppo•ARTICLE•Global Crime•2010•Cited by: 7

The article aims at analysing the transfer of anti-corruption norms and standards as well as the instrumental use of anti-corruption efforts in Georgia. Drawing on the literature on anthropology and development, I use Georgia as a case study to analyse how an anti-corruption discourse is translated into local agendas. In the first part, I analyse three different perspectives on the fight against corruption in Georgia. In the second part, I examin…

  • The Externalization of JHA Policies in Georgia: Partner or Hotbed of Threats

    Lili Di Puppo•ARTICLE•Journal of European Integration•2008•Cited by: 8•References: 5

This paper argues that the European Union’s attempts to externalize JHA policies and turn neighbouring countries into partners contributing to its internal security are hampered by numerous factors, including its obvious ambivalence towards these countries. The limitations of pursuing internal security objectives through a ‘soft’ partnership approach are particularly visible in the South Caucasus. The paper examines the EU’s policies in Georgia a…
