From LGBT+ Pride to NHS Praise
Drawing on cultural materialism, this article addresses the changing meanings of the rainbow flag over time and space, and focuses on its use in Great Britain in the context of the Covid-19 global pandemic. The flag, a long-standing emblem of the LGBT+ community, was temporarily used to express support for National Health Service workers. The article deconstructs this semantic shift, which turned a symbol used by a marginalised group into a conse…
Forty Years of Strife. From the Great Miners’ Strike of 1984-1985 to the Strike Surge of the Early 2020s
IntroductionThe year 2024 marked the 40th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Miners’ Strike of 1984-1985. Commemorative events were held in former mining communities, some featuring prominent actors of the time, while six left-wing Labour MPs tabled an early day motion which both castigated the “weaponisation of the state [...] by those at the highest level against ordinary men and women” and paid tribute to “some of the finest orators, or…
Striking against and under Neoliberalism
The strikes that took place in the UK in 2022 and 2023 were the first episode of industrial action on this scale since the late 1980s. As such, they were also the first to take place within and against the full force of the anti-union consensus, which is one strand of the post-1979 neoliberal hegemony. The 2022-23 strike episode can therefore not be regarded as a repetition of previous ones, since it emerged in conditions which are specific to th…
A Most Neoliberal Encounter
This article explores how the British welfare state was mobilized in the United Kingdom’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic in the context of neoliberal capitalism. This response was conditioned by neoliberal dynamics that had previously shaped the British welfare state, with low investment in healthcare as a case study. The crisis response itself reproduced and amplified neoliberal dynamics, such as poorly accountable contracting out in healthca…
Laura Carter, Histories of Everyday Life – The Making of Popular Social History in Britain, 1918-1979
Laura Carter is a historian writing about historical knowledge, yet Histories of Everyday Life is not solely about historiography (although it is about that too).It is an inquiry into history as a cultural practice. This particular form of history, whose name (the History of Everyday Life) the author coined (p.1), is quite hard to define. It is only at the end of the book that one gets a proper grasp at what it really was.It was, in short, popular …
Public Services in the UK
This special edition of the French Journal of British Studies was prompted by the eruption of a number of scandals concerning private companies involved in the running of public services in the UK, notably the liquidation of Carillion in January 2018. Carillion was a multinational construction and facilities management services company based in Wolverhampton, employing 19,000 people in the UK alone. It was heavily involved in the provision of pub…
