What is Jewish in Jewish philosophy
The aim of this article is to explore understandings of Jewish philosophy. According to Daniel H. Frank, Jewish philosophy is an academic discipline invented in the nineteenth century by scholars intent on gaining a foothold of academic respectability. Once the category Jewish philosophy was created by the German Wissenschaft des Judentums it was associated with general philosophy in order to include certain thinkers and exclude others. The autho…
Buber, Rosenzweig, Lévinas: Tre judiska bidrag till förståelsen av verkligheten
This article compares three important Jewish philosophers of our century with each other: Martin Buber (1879–1965), Franz Rosenzweig (1886–1929) and Emmanuel Lévinas (1906–1995). There are some obvious reasons for doing this already in the facts that Buber and Rosenzweig for years worked close to each other and that Lévinas himself acknowledged his debt to Rosenzweig. Their philosophical closeness expresses itself in their stress that philosophy …
Förintelsen i litteraturen
This paper is an introduction to and commentary on what is often referred to as the holocaust literature. The author favors terms such as shoah or churban, which mean ‘catastrophe’, ‘destruction’ over the more widespread term holocaust. The latter is a sacrificial term from the Bible meaning “burn offering”. This has misleading connotations: the destruction of European Jews cannot be considered a sacrifice in any ordinary sense. The paper discuss…
Buber och bibeln: Synpunkter på hans översättning och interpretation
In this article, the author presents Martin Buber’s translation of the Hebrew bible into German. Buber made a great effort to express the original etymological meaning of the Hebrew words in the German translation. In his work, Buber followed a dialogical principle and a theo-political principle. The dialogical principle refers to a hermeneutical interpretation which enables a dialogue between the original text and present time. In his theo-polit…

Judar och judendom i kristen skolundervisning
International research projects on the picture of Jews and Judaism presented in Christian textbooks and curricula have been carried out for some 25 years. The pioneer work is B.E. Olson’s Faith and Prejudice: Intergroup Problems in Protestant Curricula (1963) undertaken at Yale University. Olson focused not only on the question of how Jews are viewed, but also how Catholics and Protestant groups were pictured in the same materials. Moving on the …
Några centrala judiska begrepp i de finlandssvenska religionsböckerna för grundskolan
A thematic study of Judaism appears on the curriculum only in the 7th of the 9 grades in elementary school. To this rather short course one has to add much of the material on the Bible, especially what is said about Judaism at the time of Jesus. Here a whole series of key concepts turn up already in the first two grades. In this connection much relevant and also correct information is given. However, also the supposed old contradictions between e…
Judiskt – kristet – mänskligt. Ett symposium om Martin Buber
In this article the authors outline the personal history and thoughts of Martin Buber. Buber’s Judaism stresses the realization of the prophetic ideals – themes which he also found in the Hasidic tradition. Another realization of these ideals he found in cultural Zionism, for which he fought in Europe as well as in his later homeland, Israel. His following in the political field was rather limited, whereas his influence on dialogical philosophy, …
Den teologiska Holocaustlitteraturen
This article examines Holocaust from the perspective of Jewish theology. In the history of Judaism, there have been several disastrous events which have gained much attention in Jewish theology. In the core of the question why Jews repeatedly have encountered hardship, is the question of theodicy: how is it possible that the God of Israel, the God of the chosen people, leaves his people in hardship? Theological Holocaust literature should be view…
Modern judisk bibeltolkning
In this article, the author presents modern Jewish Bible research in Europe, the US and Israel/Palestine. Although Wissenschaft des Judentums rather reluctantly included historico-critical research of the Hebrew bible, we find the beginnings of the so called higher criticism among its early masters: Zunz, Geiger and Graetz. The trend toward radical criticism gained strength through scholars like Kohler, Bernstein and Maybaum in the second half of…
