Auditory Word Recognition Ability in Babble Noise and Phonological Development in Children at 3;6 Years of Age
Background noise challenges auditory recognition of speech and may reveal the underlying deficits in auditory word recognition skills. Previous studies have reported an association between children’s auditory skills and various linguistic skills, including phonology, although in some languages only. However, language-specific features influence these connections. This study describes the associations between auditory word recognition ability and …
Associations between early pre-reading and phonological skills in the light of auditory word recognition and lexical ability
The association between pre-reading skills and phonological production skills has been shown at school age, but less is known about how these skills interact at an earlier age when they are just developing. The focus was to investigate whether a connection between pre-reading skills (letter naming, rapid automatised naming; RAN) and phonological production skills of children at 3;6 could be found. In addition, the possible effects of the followin…
Designing knowledge construction in pre-service teachers’ collaborative planning talk
In this paper, we report on a qualitative study of student teachers’ collaboration in planning and implementing a course that integrated physics and the Finnish language. Audio-recorded planning sessions and interviews were examined using qualitative content analysis, first, to discover what kind of space for knowledge construction student teachers designed for learners and, second, to identify the characteristics of their collaboration in develo…

Gendered power dynamics and HIV risk in drug-using sexual relationships
This study illustrates how a sample (n = 63) of Scottish drug-using women's patterns of injecting and needle sharing were strongly influenced by the nature and type of their sexual relationships. Our data shows that 12 out of the 13 drug-using couples were sharing needles and 33 out of 41 drug-using women who had ever been in a sexual relationship with a male injector had been predominately injected by their partner whilst in that relationship. F…
