Foreign investment in Swedish industry on the eve of World War One
During the half-century before World War One (WWI), Sweden was one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, but also one of the most indebted. While the role of foreign capital for public investments during this period is emphasised in previous research, its importance for the funding of Swedish industry is commonly de-emphasised. The conventional view is that since public investments could be financed by foreign money, this relieved pressu…
Structural change as the primary driver of water pollution reductions: Re-evaluating the role of command and control in the Swedish pulp and paper industry (1969–1989)
Exploring the resilience of social insurance systems in the light of endogenous welfare austerity: Insights from Sweden
War and trade in the peaceful century: The Impact of Interstate Wars on Bilateral Trade Flows During the First Wave of Globalization, 1830-1913
This article examines the impact of war on trade between 1830 and 1913, that is, during the so-called first wave of globalization. It has been argued that one of the main reasons for the rapid integration of commodity and factor markets that took place during this period was the peaceful character of the post-Napoleonic nineteenth century. However, little research has been conducted on the actual impact of wars on international trade during this …
Undervaluation in probate inventories probate inventory values and auction protocol market prices in eighteenth and nineteenth century Sweden
In this article we examine the accuracy of valuations of movable property for a sample of 22 probate inventories from Swedish. The sample comprises a total of 785 probated items which we have been able to match with contemporary auction protocols, giving us an official sales price for each item. This enables us to determine the consistency between the appraisal values in the probates and prevailing market prices, despite the fact that the probate…
Neutral trade in time of war: The case of Sweden, 1838–1960
It is an established view that war aggravates economic growth due to the direct costs of war, and to the indirect costs incurred from naval warfare and economic blockades. In this article, however, we suggest that non-belligerent countries with access to open trade channels could maintain or expand their trade, even when world trade had declined. As a result, in addition to the advantages of evading the costs of war, non-belligerent countries may…
More real than reality’: A study of voice hearing
Hearing voices can be considered as elusive or illusory hallucinations in the sense that they are perceptions that have no external reason or even that they are divorced from reality. The aim of this article is to describe how participants in different focus groups account for and understand their voice‐hearing experiences. The study shows that voice hearing can be such an overwhelming experience that it can even be experienced as ‘more real than…
