Cumulative Family Sociodemographic Risk and Preschoolers’ Language Skills Development
Research Findings: This longitudinal study examined the mediating role of home literacy environment (HLE) in the relationship between family sociodemographic risk factors and preschoolers’ language skills during their transition to kindergarten. A sample of 142 children showing vulnerability regarding school readiness were assessed three times. Eight months before kindergarten, family sociodemographic information was collected, and a cumulative f…
Unraveling the effects of maternal breastfeeding duration and exclusive breast milk on children’s cognitive abilities in early childhood
Background: This study investigated the putative associations between mothers' use of exclusive breast milk and the duration of breastfeeding with child cognitive development. Methods: This study is based on 2,210 Canadian families with children assessed longitudinally from age 4 to 7 years on their memory-span and math skills. These cognitive abilities were measured with standardized tasks. Breastfeeding practices were collected via maternal rep…
Can Temperament Predict School Readiness in At-Risk Kindergarteners? A Combination of Variable-Oriented and Person-Oriented Approaches
Research Findings: In this study, a combination of variable-oriented and person-oriented statistical analyses was used to examine the links between three temperament factors (negative affectivity, surgency/extraversion, effortful control) evaluated before entry into kindergarten and the cognitive and socioemotional dimensions of school readiness measured at the end of kindergarten. The sample included 98 children considered to be at risk because …
Interactions between child temperament and family environment in relation to school readiness
Gesturers Tell a Story Creatively; Non-Gesturers Tell it like it Happened
Previous research has shown that using gestures helps children remember more information. Here, we designed two studies to test whether children who gesture tend to rely on visuospatial cognitive resources more than children who do not gesture. We also test whether children who gesture demonstrate more creativity in their narrative productions. Preschool children watched a cartoon and then were asked to tell back the story of the cartoon. In the …
When knowing only one word for “car” leads to weak application of mutual exclusivity
The development of storytelling in two languages with words and gestures
This was a cross-sectional study of storytelling development in French–English bilinguals between four and 10 years in both languages. Measures of both spoken and gestural use were examined as a function of age. The results showed that the children’s spoken narrative abilities were related to age in both languages while their rates of gestures were not. The relationship between gesture use and narrative abilities was, at best, weak. These results…
