Summer school effects in a randomized field trial
Confirmatory Factor Analysis of the TerraNova Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills/5
Confirmatory factor analysis was used to explore the internal validity of scores on the TerraNova Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills/5 using samples from a southwestern school district and standardization samples reported by the publisher. One of the strengths claimed for battery-type achievement tests is provision of reliable and valid samples of student achievement in specific content areas. Results of the present study showed that specific co…
Teachers' Perceptions of School Climate
Scores from a revised version of the School Level Environment Questionnaire (SLEQ) were validated using a sample of teachers from a large school district. An exploratory factor analysis was used with a randomly selected half of the sample. Five school environment factors emerged. A confirmatory factor analysis was run with the remaining half of the sample. Goodness-of-fit indices indicated that the factor structure fit the data reasonably well. F…
The Development and Validation of the Survey of Antitudes toward Statistics
The Survey of Attitudes Toward Statistics (SATS) was designed for use in both research and instruction. A panel of instructors and introductory statistics students identified by consensus four facets of attitudes toward statistics: (a) Affect-positive and negative feelings concerning statistics; (b) Cognitive Competence-attitudes about intellectual knowledge and skills when applied to statistics; (c) Value-attitudes about the usefulness, relevanc…
The Role of Weighting in the Use of Aggregate Scores
In a recent article, Gardner and Erdle (1984) have argued inappropriately against prior standardization of scores when an aggregate score is formed. They demonstrate that an aggregate of raw scores may not correlate perfectly with an aggregate of standard scores, and that the correlation of an external criterion with the two types of aggregates may differ markedly. However, these effects are not a function of standardization. They are an artifact…
