  • An Empirical Classification of Motivations for Domestic Violence

    Open Access•L Kevin Hamberger, Jeffrey M Lohr et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•1997•Cited by: 13•References: 5

National survey research suggests that males and females are equally likely to perpetrate domestic violence, but surveys have not examined the interpersonal context or motivation for domestic violence. The questioning of identified partner assaulters suggests that females use violence for self-defense and escape, whereas males use violence to exercise control, punish, or demand attention. The perception of perpetrator violence, however, appears a…

  • Social Desirability and Endorsement of Irrational Beliefs

    Open Access•Jeffrey M Lohr, Dennis Bonge et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1983

Irrational beliefs have been proposed as causal agents in emotional disorders. Endorsement of such beliefs is positively correlated with anxiety, depression, and anger. However, measurement of irrational beliefs may reflect social-desirability bias. 159 subjects completed validated measures of irrational beliefs and a measure of social desirability. Three of nine belief scales were negatively correlated with social desirability. It is concluded t…

  • On the Distinction between Illogical and Irrational Beliefs and Their Relationship to Anxiety

    Open Access•Jeffrey M Lohr, Dennis Bonge•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1981

To determine the relationship between dysfunctional cognitions and anxiety, 242 undergraduates completed the Irrational Beliefs Test, the Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale, and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. The former is said to measure Ellis' irrational beliefs and the latter is said to measure attitudes related to Beck's measure of depressed affect. While these two scores and the anxiety measures were all significantly correlated, a canonical …

  • Retest Reliability of the Irrational Beliefs Test

    Open Access•Jeffrey M Lohr, Dennis Bonge•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1980

Ellis ( 2 ) has proposed that subjective anxiety is a result of irrational beliefs and syllogistic reasoning processes. People draw catastrophic conclusions on the basis of irrational inferences made about problems which face them. Rational-Emotive Therapy has been developed to modify irrational beliefs and anxiety. Surprisingly, little empirical research has been directed tow>rds the measurement of irrational beliefs. At present, only one measur…

  • Relationship of Coronary-Prone Behavior and Irrational Beliefs in College-Age and Older Males

    Open Access•Jeffrey M Lohr, Dennis Bonge•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1980

Coronary-prone (Pattern A) behavior is considered a generalized strategy to control stress. Irrational beliefs are also generalized expectancies regarding the nature of social and physical stressors. Therapy designed to modify irrational beliefs has been applied in the treatment of coronary-prone behavior, but there has been no demonstration of the relationship between irrational beliefs and coronary-prone behavior. College-age and older males co…

  • Effects of Self-Imposition and Experimenter Imposition of Achievement Standards on Performance

    Open Access•W John Schuldt, Dennis Bonge•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1979

This research assessed the effects of imposition of achievement standards on crank-turning within conditions in which apparent reinforcements were present. Subjects were assigned to one of four experimental conditions: self-imposition of achievement standards, experimenter's imposition of achievement standards, apparatus-feedback control, and baserate control. A steady decline in cranking over the period was noted. Subjects given experimenter's s…

  • Dimensions of Students' Evaluation of Instruction

Open Access•Brian Bolton, Dennis Bonge et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1976

A two-stage procedure was used to reduce 75 factors isolated in 11 selected studies of students' evaluation of instruction to six major dimensions: I. Effort demanded by instructor, II. Instructor's preparation and organization, III. Instructor's evaluation of student performance, IV. Instructor's knowledge of subject, V. Value of course to student, and VI. Instructor's friendliness and regard for student. Each dimension is illustrated with four …
