Insights into sustainability
Purpose Interdisciplinary environmental and sustainability programs integrate a diverse curriculum that exposes students to the interconnectedness of environmental systems, such as climate change and the Food-Energy-Water Nexus and fosters a holistic understanding of sustainability. However, students’ prior knowledge, alternative conceptions and knowledge gaps can impact student learning. Therefore, the purpose of this study aims to: 1) uncover h…
Does Sending a Printed Survey as the Final Reminder Boost Response Rate? A Mixed Mode Approach
Declining response rates in social science surveys are a widespread challenge for human dimensions of natural resources researchers. In this research note, we tested two modes for the final survey reminder: a letter reminding the recipient to complete the survey and a printed survey. Despite the cost of printing and mailing a survey, this approach increased our response rate and had a better return on investment. Additionally, paper survey respon…
Perceptions of moose health and support for hunting as a management strategy against parasitism
Enhancing Conservation Science Through Transdisciplinary Practices
The field of conservation science has seen increasing calls for research transcending traditional academic boundaries, but concerns remain as to whether such work can translate into practical guidance and toolsets for conservationists. This literature review seeks to provide emerging scholars and practitioners of transdisciplinary research with a contemporary assessment of transdisciplinary practices to enhance their conservation science research…
Implementing interdisciplinary sustainability education with the food-energy-water (FEW) nexus
Growth in the green jobs sector has increased demand for college graduates who are prepared to enter the workforce with interdisciplinary sustainability skills. Simultaneously, scholarly calls for interdisciplinary collaboration in the service of addressing the societal challenges of enhancing resilience and sustainability have also increased in recent years. However, developing, executing, and assessing interdisciplinary content and skills at th…
FEW questions, many answers
There is growing support and interest in postsecondary interdisciplinary environmental education, which integrates concepts and disciplines in addition to providing varied perspectives. There is a need to assess student learning in these programs as well as rigorous evaluation of educational practices, especially of complex synthesis concepts. This work tests a text classification machine learning model as a tool to assess student systems thinkin…
An exploratory study of drawings as a tool to evaluate student understanding of the Food-Energy-Water (FEW) Nexus
As future decision-makers, students must develop interdisciplinary, systems thinking skills to make effective management decisions; however, systems thinking remains challenging for many students. Here, we use the Food-Energy-Water (FEW) Nexus as a framework to examine how drawings can help students cultivate systems thinking skills. Drawings can be tools to make implicit mental models of systems connections explicit for instructors to better com…
