  • Global norms, organizational action

Open Access•Afrooz Kaviani Johnson•ARTICLE•Leiden Journal of International Law•2025

Tragically, the abuse of children within organizational contexts continues to persist across time and geographies. Various institutions established for children’s care and protection have repeatedly been exposed as epicentres of abuse. The concept and practice of ‘child safeguarding’ has emerged as an approach to address the systemic failures within organizational settings that enable – or fail to prevent – child abuse. Child safeguarding has rec…

  • Grooming and Child Sexual Abuse in Organizational Settings—an Expanded Role for International Human Rights Law

    Open Access•Afrooz Kaviani Johnson•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Rights Practice•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This article focuses on child sexual abuse in organizational settings, with a particular emphasis on ‘grooming’. While grooming is often associated with online behaviour, its origins predate the digital age. Consequently, this article challenges the misconception of solely linking grooming to online platforms and highlights its broader recognition. The article aims to explore how international human rights law addresses grooming and how the frame…

  • All Care, No Responsibility

    Open Access•Afrooz Kaviani Johnson•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2022

This article examines the duties imposed by international law and domestic legislation to facilitate the reporting of child abuse. With a focus on mandatory reporting legislation in four countries in Eastern and Southern Africa, the article fills a gap in existing literature which largely focuses on the “Global North”. The article elaborates on the complexities of introducing mandatory reporting in countries where the formal capacity to respond t…

  • Disclosure, reporting and help seeking among child survivors of violence

Open Access•Audrey Pereira, Amber Peterman et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Across countries examined, help-seeking and receipt of formal services is low for children experiencing physical and/or sexual violence, with few consistent factors identified which facilitated help-seeking. Further understanding of help seeking, alongside improved data quality and availability will aid prevention responses, including the ability to assist child survivors in a timely manner

  • Safeguarding Children in the Developing World—Beyond Intra-Organisational Policy and Self-Regulation

    Open Access•Afrooz Kaviani Johnson, Julia Sloth–nielsen•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Safeguarding in the context of development and humanitarian assistance has received heightened international attention since 2018. Emerging literature has not yet investigated the extent to which responses are evolving in the best interests of the child, in line with the treaty-based rights of children. This article makes a unique contribution to scholarship by applying a child rights lens to safeguarding efforts in the aid sector with a focus on…

  • Sudanese Refugees in Cairo

Karen Jacobsen, Malek Ayoub et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2014•Cited by: 10•References: 1

Many refugees become 'stuck' in the urban centres of transit countries, unable to move onward or to return home. This study explored the livelihoods of Sudanese refugees in Cairo, and the extent to which remittances supported them. We found that 89 per cent of our respondents were economically active, but their income seldom covered their rent plus subsistence. A quarter of our sample received remittances, but these are not a reliable source of i…

  • Protecting Children’s Rights in Asian Tourism

    Afrooz Kaviani Johnson•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 3

International attention was first drawn to horrifying accounts of children being sexually exploited by foreign tourists in South East Asia in the early 1990s. This article reviews progress over the last two decades to combat this crime. With tourism reaching record levels and the relative vulnerability of children in South East Asia, I contend it is an opportune time to re-examine the response. Moving forwards, prevention initiatives must better …

  • International Child Sex Tourism

Afrooz Kaviani Johnson•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2011

South East Asia has earned the dubious reputation of being the world's prime child sex tourism destination. While a number of commentators have analysed extra-territorial legislation in the home countries of travelling child sex off enders, this article assesses the laws in the South East Asian destination countries in order to stimulate debate and action on much-needed reform. Unfortunately, few provisions in national legislation specifically ad…
