  • Varia Gallo-Indo-Iranica

    Alexander Falileyev•ARTICLE•Journal of Celtic Linguistics•2026

This paper revisits several equations, old and new, of Gaulish personal names with the data obtained from the earliest Indo-Iranian languages. Formal and semantic aspects of the comparisons are discussed, and this allows us to reconsider a number of etymologies suggested for Gaulish anthroponymy. Besides, some of the names turn out to be not linguistically Celtic, and arguments against their Celticity are provided. The mechanisms underlying forma…

  • Clot ac en∂ in Rhamant Otuel

    Alexander Falileyev•ARTICLE•Journal of Celtic Linguistics•2025

This paper considers the Middle Welsh phrase clot ac en∂ which translates chevalerie in the poem Otinel from the Charlemagne cycle of medieval narratives. It studies both diachronic and synchronic aspects of this collocation, and addresses the popular theory which explains its emergence as part of the tendency in Middle Welsh prose to use two synonymous words to render one idea. Particular attention is paid to the usage of this device in medieval…

  • More on Celtic (and non-Celtic) names from Pannonia

  • Ossetic Boar

    Ю А Дзиццойты, Alexander Falileyev•ARTICLE•Iran and the Caucasus•2024•References: 1

The article deals with the Ossetic word for ‘boar’ against the backgrounds of modern Ossetic porcine terminology. The Common Iranian name of the beast has survived in Ossetic anthroponymy only. Due to taboos many descriptive names for ‘boar’ are in use, such as ‘forest pig’, etc. The standard term (Digorian) tusk’a ‘boar’ was discussed by V. Abaev on a number of occasions, and the doyen of Ossetic studies considered it among Ossetic-European isog…

  • El topónimo Τουκρίς en la Hispania Tarraconense (Ptol. II, 6, 55)

    Open Access•Alexander Falileyev•ARTICLE•Palaeohispanica Revista sobre…•2023

The recently published Die vorrömische einheimische Toponymie des antiken Hispanien surveys various hypotheses regarding the pre-history of the place-name Τουκρίς and does not come to any definitive conclusion. If in fact it is Celtic in origins, there are several possibilities for its linguistic analysis. The paper tentatively suggest its derivation from PIE *teuh2- ‘to swell, be strong’, a prospect which has already been considered on the level…

  • A Visit of Two Irish Franciscans to North Wales in 1323

    Alexander Falileyev•ARTICLE•Peritia•2022

The paper discusses the Welsh leg of the journey presented in Itinerarium Symonis Semeonis ab Hybernia ad Terram Sanctam in order to reconstruct the route from Anglesey to Chester that the pilgrims took in 1323. The discussion of stylistic peculiarities in the text points to its pragmatic function, and it may be surmised whether this section in fact reflects the first-hand experience of its author

  • Greek τηλεκλυτός ‘far-famed’ and its Welsh comparanda

    Alexander Falileyev•ARTICLE•Indogermanische Forschungen•2022

The paper examines a possible Welsh cognate of Greek τηλεκλυτός ‘farfamed’, the rare Middle Welsh pellglot, and analyses it and its alleged Greek congener within the framework of Indo-European poetic language studies. It pays considerable attention to the conventions of medieval Welsh versification that (with other factors considered) may undermine the dating of the reconstructed compound underlying the Greek and Middle Welsh word to the Proto-In…

  • A Dictionary of Gaulish Nominal Stems. Review of the book

    Open Access•Alexander Falileyev, Alexander I Falileyev•ARTICLE•Вопросы ономастики•2021

This new book by Xavier Delamarre is the first volume of the dictionary of Gaulish nominal bases. Since onomastics is the source for most of its data, this book is of interest for the readers of this journal. Apart from Gaulish, the author considers data of other ancient Celtic languages such as Lepontic, Celtiberian, or British (Brittonic). The review surveys methodological aspects underlying this research, and particularly a number of questions…

  • The Silent Europe

    Open Access•Alexander Falileyev•ARTICLE•Palaeohispanica Revista sobre…•2020

The contribution deals with a number of areas in ancient Europe where the epichoric languages are predominantly and primarily onomastic. After a brief consideration of certain theoretical problems, it starts off with a survey of the "Ligurian" set of questions and then moves to the vast region which has been formally considered a domain of the "Illyrian" language. The paper discusses the available data and reviews anthroponymic provinces traditio…

    Alexander Falileyev•ARTICLE•Journal of Celtic Linguistics•2019

  • ‘Lepontic’ AnareKarTos , revisited

    Alexander Falileyev•ARTICLE•Historical Linguistics•2019

This article discusses the ‘Lepontic’ coin legend AnareKarTos and claims that there are no grounds to depart from the morphological analysis accepted for decades in favour of the one suggested recently in this journal. It offers a number of formally acceptable interpretations of it, none of which could be seen as final since the semantic component of the reconstruction is missing. The rough calculus of variants also considers different morphologi…
