    Open Access•Stuart Mccook•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•2011

The landscapes of the Greater Caribbean have been undergoing a process of ecological globalization since the arrival of European explorers and settlers in the late fifteenth century. The character of this ecological globalization has changed over time. Models of commodity-led economic development drove, directly or indirectly, the neo-Columbian exchanges of the long nineteenth century (roughly 1720-1930). The neo-Columbian exchanges differed from…

  • Una historia ambiental del café en Guatemala: La Costa Cuca entre 1830 y 1902

    Stuart Mccook•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2011

Latin American historians have devoted considerable attention to the study of the region’s coffee industries, although few of them have dwelt on coffee’s rich environmental history. Stefania Gallini’s new Historia ambiental del café en Guatemala focuses particularly on coffee’s environmental history. Like other classic coffee histories, such as Stanley Stein’s Vassouras, Gallini has written a fine-grained analysis of one coffee region, with an ey…

  • An Environmental History of Latin America

    Stuart Mccook•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2010

Over the past several decades, the environmental history of Latin America has emerged as a vibrant field. Historians have produced innovative studies exploring nature’s central role in Latin American history. Most of these studies, however, are local or regional in scope. Miller’s Environmental History of Latin America is an excellent synthesis of the literature, inflected by his own original and thoughtful analytical voice.Miller traces the envi…

The quantitative growth of coffee production and consumption in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries produced qualitative transformations along every step of the coffee commodity chain. The economic integration of the global coffee market in this period triggered major east-west biological exchanges between the world's coffee regions. The global epidemic of coffee leaf rust, caused by the fungus Hemileia vastatrix , illustrates the ecological a…

    Open Access•Stuart Mccook•ARTICLE•The Americas A Quarterly Review…•2002•Cited by: 1•References: 13

In a 1924 essay, the botanist Henri Pittier worried that many of Latin America's tropical products—particularly its plants—lacked a ‘civil status.’ By this, Pittier meant that they had not yet been identified and named scientifically. He likened the plants’ lack of a botanical ‘civil status’ to a person's lacking a passport or credentials that proved their citizenship. This was more than a casual analogy. Over the previous half-century, many stat…
