  • A comparative study of past and projected future dynamics of drought hazards across the districts of the Northern Cape Province, South Africa: Analysis of CRU TS4 data and Cordex-Africa RCM simulation…

Open Access•Stephen Balaka Opiyo, Lisa Pienaar et al.•ARTICLE•South African Geographical Journal•2026

Drought is among the most pressing natural disasters of the 21st century. The need for insights to support local decision-making in planning and mitigation is critical. The Northern Cape Province of South Africa is highly drought-prone, yet its historical and projected drought patterns are not well understood. Therefore, this study assessed past (1962–2022), near-future (2023–2050), and far-future (2051–2100) drought dynamics across its five dist…

  • Key challenges for tropospheric chemistry in the Southern Hemisphere

    Open Access•Clare Paton‐Walsh, Clare Paton-Walsh et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2022

This commentary paper from the recently formed International Global Atmospheric Chemistry (IGAC) Southern Hemisphere Working Group outlines key issues in atmospheric composition research that particularly impact the Southern Hemisphere. In this article, we present a broad overview of many of the challenges for understanding atmospheric chemistry in the Southern Hemisphere, before focusing in on the most significant factors that differentiate it f…

  • Housing Quality in a Rural and an Urban Settlement in South Africa

Open Access•Angela Mathee, Jocelyn Moyes et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

During 2016 to 2018, a prospective household cohort study of influenza and respiratory syncytial virus community burden and transmission dynamics (the PHIRST study) was undertaken to examine the factors associated with influenza and other respiratory pathogen transmissions in South Africa. We collected information on housing conditions in the PHIRST study sites: Rural villages near Agincourt, Bushbuckridge Municipality, Mpumalanga Province, and u…

  • A cross-sectional study measuring contact patterns using diaries in an urban and a rural community in South Africa, 2018

Open Access•Jackie Kleynhans, Stefano Tempia et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Age played an important role in the number and duration of contact events, with children at the rural site having almost double the contact rate compared to the urban site. These contact rates can be utilized in mathematical models to assess transmission dynamics of infectious diseases in similar communities

  • A historical perspective on the prevalence, distribution and influence of African Horse Sickness in Namibia

Open Access•Danica Liebenberg, Pieter Warnich et al.•ARTICLE•New Contree•2017

African Horse Sickness (AHS) is a devastating, non-contagious, infectious, insect-borne disease of equids. AHS is endemic to sub-Saharan Africa. Culicoides midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) act as vectors for the transmission of the causative agent, African Horse Sickness virus (AHSV). It is considered to be one of the most lethal horse diseases with mortality rates exceeding 80% in susceptible hosts. The AHS season is one of the most critical ti…

  • A 3000-year high-resolution stalagmitebased record of palaeoclimate for northeastern South Africa

    Open Access•Karin Holmgren, Wibjörn Karlén et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1999•Cited by: 15•References: 7

High-resolution stable isotope variations and growth structure analyses of the last three millennia of a 6600-year stalagmite record at Cold Air Cave, Makapansgat Valley, South Africa, are presented. Growth layers, which are measurable over the last 250 years, are shown to be annual. The correlation between the width of growth layers and precipitation is strongly positive. Changes inδ 18 O andδ 13 C are positively correlated and inversely correla…
