  • An ocean literacy intervention in elementary education: Exploring the society-nature relationship through the case of Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

Open Access•Victor Hugo Cordeiro Vianna, Edson Pereira Silva et al.•ARTICLE•Marine Policy•2025

  • Challenges and prospects for teaching ocean literacy in Brazilian schools

Open Access•Carmen Edith Pazoto, Michelle Rezende Duarte et al.•ARTICLE•Marine Policy•2024

  • Ocean literacy in Brazilian formal education: A tool for participative coastal management

Open Access•Carmen Edith Pazoto, Michelle Rezende Duarte et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Environmental…•2023

Ocean literacy (OL) proposes to include ocean and marine environment-related content in school curricula. Such a topic has been deemed effective for citizens to develop actions and attitudes towards the health of marine ecosystems. This study aimed to verify the presence and frequency of OL principles and concepts in the Brazilian high school curriculum at the federal (National Curricular Parameters-PCN) and regional (Rio de Janeiro - Curricular …

  • Education and the marine environmental issue: A historical review of research fields and the popularization on conservation and management of the sea and ocean in Brazil

Carmen Edith Pazoto, Michelle Rezende Duarte et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Environmental…•2023

Worldwide initiatives have been promoting awareness on marine environmental issues. In Brazil Maritime Mentality Program arises from political disputes over the right to use maritime spaces, Coastal Marine Environmental Education shares the same theoretical basis as Environmental Education and Ocean Literacy appears in the USA and became globally widespread after its inclusion as one goal of Ocean Decade. Based on a literature review this article…

  • Malacological remains from the Sambaqui da Tarioba (Rio das Ostras – RJ, Brazil): Marine mollusc biodiversity in the recent Holocene

Open Access•Tate Aquino de Arruda, Edson Pereira Silva et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023•References: 18

Malacological vestiges originated from an excavation done in the Sambaqui da Tarioba (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) were classified and described by the indexes NISP (number of identified specimes) and MNI (minimum number of individual). Furthermore, tests were done in order to verify if there was any difference among the archaeostratigraphic layers. Radiocarbon dating revealed an occupation period of 550 years along the Late Holocene (4070-3520 BP). A…

  • Sambaquis as a proxies of late Holocene mollusk diversity on the coast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Open Access•Sara Christina Pádua, Edson Pereira Silva et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeofauna•2019•References: 5

Efficiency of archaeozoological vestiges from shell mounds to recover biodiver- sity patterns were tested using a meso-scale inventory (150 archaeological sites from Rio de Janeiro Coast) of malacological vestiges from sambaquis against an inventory of present times mollusk species recorded for the same area. Statistical analysis were done using Taxonomic Dis- tinctness tests and Trophic Diversity inferences. No statistical significant difference…

  • Zooarchaeological evidence that the brown mussel ( Perna perna) is a bioinvader of coastal Brazil

Open Access•Edson Pereira Silva, Rosa CCL Souza et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2018•References: 2

Interactions between invader species and the local biota may lead to disequilibria in regional ecosystems. For such reason, the cultivation of nonnative species may be prohibited in specific regions, as a means of protecting native species. On the other hand, the question of whether a species is a bioinvader or not may not be straightforward. This is the case of the mollusc Perna perna, presently naturalized and widely distributed along Brazilian…

  • Changes in patterns of biodiversity of marine mollusks along the Brazilian coast during the late Holocene inferred from shell-mound (sambaquis) data

Open Access•Rosa CCL Souza, Tania Andrade Lima et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 6

An archaeological dimension expands the concept of biodiversity by generating long-term perspectives, combining multiple approaches and methodologies to enhance understanding of environmental changes. Aiming to investigate the patterns of biodiversity of marine mollusks over time, a comparison was made between three sets of archaeological sites (shellmounds) located in three geographic areas of the south-southeastern Brazilian coast. Sites dated …
